“The Ice Star” Review

Hello Friends!

So, I just realized this post I had schedule a while back didn’t post. So first of all, I want to apologize to the author for the late review. And to you guys, I hope this review makes you curious.

The Ice Star“, written by Christoffer Petersen, is book one of the Konstabel Fenna Brongaard Series,  and it’s a mystery/crime novel.

I received a complimentary copy of this book thanks to Christoffer Petersen. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Synopsis

34315210. sy475 Fenna stretched her legs, one eye on the Nepali man with the brutal backhand, the other on a glass of water on the floor. She jerked her head backward as the second man stepped into view, and his large military boot connected with the glass, kicking it against the wooden wall where it smashed, showering her in shards and splinters.
“Konstabel Fenna Brongaard, my name is Burwardsley. We met on the ice.”

She’s the first of her kind – the first woman to join the ranks of the elite Danish Sirius Sledge Patrol, and the first Sirius patroller to be investigated for murder.

In the wake of a hurricane-force piteraq, fog isolates the village of Ittoqqortoormiit and Fenna from the outside world. As the investigation takes a vicious turn, Fenna must trust a Greenlandic policeman and a local hunter if she is to root out the infection at the heart of the Danish military.

Looking for new Danish Noir? It doesn’t get much darker than this.

The Ice Star is a Scandinavian Crime Thriller set in Greenland – coming soon!

My Review

I had the pleasure of reading this book a while back and I found it absolutely exciting and interesting. I always look forward to read crime/mystery novel, but I don’t think I have read that many that were described as noir novels, and to be honest, I didn’t know much about it.

P1070035It was a rollercoaster and I love when a mystery novel gets me so focus that I almost feel like I’m there. The descriptions and the characters are the main reason that happens, because the plot could be fascinating but if the characters didn’t make the uncovering feel real and exciting, then what’s the point?… In this book, I had those elements I love, I had the emotions and connection, I had a good plot and was quite unusual and I loved that, and of course the characters that just painted the all book with fantastic personalities and grabbed my attention.

Another thing that made me very intrigued was the location. I haven’t traveled much, I have been to Spain, Germany, France and Switzerland, so I’m always intrigued to learn more about other countries and see through the characters eyes, and the author’s words, the world they live in.

I have to say, I do like that the main character is a woman, because I’m always looking forwards a good crime/mystery novel when it’s a woman revealing the secrets and finding out the trust, because I feel connected to her and her work. Then again, I was named after Jessica Fletcher and I used to watch (still do) the TV show with my mom, so maybe that’s why I get very excited when it’s a female main character.

It was a great start of a series, because it gave us an amazing introduction to Fenna and it gives us some initial understanding about the procedures. Since I don’t know a lot about other countries police procedures, it’s always interesting to learn. Plus, we are learning about Fenna and her way of working and what are her core believes.

P1070012Also, since it is the beginning we learn about the world, about the society, politics and cultural aspects, not just about the police and the investigation elements. And that was something I liked because, let’s be honest, if you don’t know about what moves the characters, and what their society is like, you need those information. It doesn’t matter if it’s a fantasy novel or a crime novel that happens in planet Earth. We need to learn about the context of the story, and when a book has that, it gives the all story a lot more complexity and opens up world to the reader.

Overall, I can’t wait to read more about this novel because I know there are still a lot of things I could learn about Fenna. She was such an interesting and well written character, I just loved her.  I’m not going to give you notes and comments about the story itself because could ruin the mystery, but be sure to check out this book and go on a mysterious and ice adventure with Fenna.

“Gun Kiss” Review

Hello Friends!

Finally I had all day to prepare posts and finally right the reviews of some of the books I read a while back.

Last month I got a email from Khaled Talib, the author of “Gun Kiss“, and I want to thank him for allowing me to read his book and give my honest review.

Blurb

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000040_00069]A stolen piece of history, an abducted actress and international intrigue…

When the Deringer pistol that shot Abraham Lincoln is stolen and ends up in the hands of a Russian military general, covert agent Blake Deco is tasked by the FBI to head to the Balkans to recover the historical weapon. Meanwhile, the United States media is abuzz with news of the mysterious disappearance of Hollywood movie star, Goldie St. Helen.

After Blake’s return from overseas, he receives a tip from a Mexican friend that a drug lord, obsessed with the beautiful actress, is holding her captive in Tijuana. With the help of a reluctant army friend, Blake mounts a daring rescue. What he doesn’t expect is to have feelings for Goldie—or that a killer is hunting them.

My Review

P1060546This is the first book I have read of Khaled Talib and first of all, when I got the request, I was curious by the blurb and by the cover, because it all reminded me of a poster for an action movie.

With action scenes, a charming hero and a beautiful movie star, romance, drama, a drug lord seeking revenge against our lovely main character, danger, and a fast pace in the storyline. That last quality, gives the book an even more powerful tone because it truly sounded and looked (with descriptions and particular scenes) like a movie.

P1060547We first get introduced to the hero, Blake Deco, this charismatic and handsome man that is a spy/agent/whatever he is, he is good at what he does. And right after we start the book we get to follow him while he tries to recover the pistol that was used to assassinate Abraham Lincoln. That was something unique right from the very beginning and it caught my attention.

Then we get to meet Goldie, the movie star that was kidnapped and that was rescued by Blake. So, as Blake and Goldie’s relationship keeps growing, there is tension, there is some romance, and of course there is drama because the drug lord that kidnapped Goldie is still alive and is after them.

P1060549Of course, as a hopeless romantic I would have love to have read more about their romance, because I feel like that could have given a good balance to the book. But that’s just my personal opinion.

I did enjoy this book because it was visual, it was fun and action packed, and it was a satisfying book for a late afternoon with a cup of tea and just relaxing and enjoy this adventure, just like you would enjoy an action movie.
