Forgive Me“, written by Kateri Stanley, is a Horror and Thriller novel, published on 20th April 2021, by Darkstroke Books.

I want to thank Rachel, at Rachel’s Random Resources, and Kateri Stanley for the eCopy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Synopsis

Forgive Me Cover

A secret video tape. A painful truth. A quest for revenge.

Investigative journalist, Susan ‘Stripe’ McLachlan, is constantly hounded by eager documentarians for interview requests about the Night Scrawler murders. One of the victims of the mysterious serial killer was a member of her own family, her father.

At the peak of her career, her services are sought by Isaac Payne who commissions her to write an article for his website. Usually, her projects delve into more uncomfortable, questionable topics, but there’s a deep, almost hauntingly familiar pull about her new client that intrigues her.

As she learns more about Isaac, Stripe digs up fresh secrets about the murders, arousing her suspicions. After an awkward confrontation, she wakes up in Isaac’s bed — with a chain around her ankle.

Isaac shows her harrowing footage on an old VHS tape. The contents hits close to home…closer than Stripe ever imagined. Now, she has to wrestle with her own moral compass and unpick the truth from the web of lies that turn into a crescendo where memories created from misery and suffering cannot be silenced.

Will Isaac ever lay the past to rest? And how will Stripe cope with the revelations that challenge everything she has ever known?

My Review

Thrillers are stories that I found myself quite enjoying, but this book took it to a new level. It had a good amount of horror and psychological elements to it, and something more too. It left me at the edge of my seat and wanting to read more despite my heart jumping a couple of times.

This book follows investigative journalist, Susan ‘Stripe’ McLachlan, as she goes on a journey to uncover the truth about a particular story and the haunted past connected to her. Let me just say that as someone that as been loving the all true crime podcasts, I would definitely follow Stripe’s investigations if she was a real person with a podcast. I felt curious about her and she did grab my attention, it wasn’t just the plot.

Speaking of plot…. I loved the twists and turns. I don’t even know what to say without accidentally giving spoilers, so I will let you know that I was not expecting certain things that happened.

Overall, I loved the characters and how everything was connected. I also liked the changes of timelines when it came to the storytelling. All the elements in this book made it unique and refreshing, as much as it made it unexpected… Just like it’s story and its characters.

When the Children Come“, written by Barry Kirwan, is a Science Fiction novel, the first book in the Series, published on 8th January 2021.

I want to thank Rachel, at Rachel’s Random Resources, and Barry Kirwan for the eCopy of this book and for allowing me to join in the fun and being a part of the blog tour with my honest review of the book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

When the Children Come Banner

Synopsis

When the Children Come Cover

Nathan, emotionally scarred after three tours in Afghanistan, lives alone in Manhattan until New Year’s Eve, when he meets Lara. The next morning, he notices something strange is going on – a terrified kid is being pursued by his father, and a girl, Sally, pleads with Nathan to hide her from her parents. There is no internet, no television, no phone coverage.

Nathan, Lara and Sally flee along the East Coast, encountering madmen, terrorists, the armed forces, and other children frightened for their lives. The only thing Nathan knows for sure is that he must not fall asleep…

A fantastic and original premise…flashes of Stephen King and MR Carey.” Tom Witcomb

A nicely taut thriller, with a Lee Child feel to its staccato writing and strong action sequences, and a high concept stretching the novel into true science fiction territory.” Amanda Rutter

Not just a page-turner – all in all a fabulous novel, which I was sad to finish.” Loulou Brown

About the Author

Barry Kirwan Author Photo

I was born in Farnborough and grew up watching the Red Arrow jet fighters paint the sky at airshows. I didn’t get into writing until years later when I arrived in Paris, where I penned The Eden Paradox series (four books) over a period of ten years. My SF influences were Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, Frank Herbert, and Orson Scott Card, but also David Brin who writes about smart aliens. Iain Banks and Alistair Reynolds remain major influences, as well as Neal Asher, Peter F Hamilton and Jack McDevitt.

My main SF premise is that if we do ever meet aliens, they’ll probably be far more intelligent than we are, and with very different values and ideas of how the galaxy works. As a psychologist by training, that interests me in terms of how to think outside our own (human) frame of reference.

When I’m not writing, I’m either working (my day job), which is preventing mid-air collisions, reading, or doing yoga or tai chi. When I’m on holiday I’m usually diving, looking for sharks. Most times I find them, or rather, they find me.

My Review

I don’t usually read Sci-Fi. Not because I don’t like it, but because I haven’t taken the chance and time to do it. It’s a genre that I’m very curious about and that I hope I can explore more. The reason why I jumped to the opportunity to read this book.

When the Children Come” is the first novel in a brand new series. Not only is this my introduction not just to the author’s writing and book, but also to a specific world he created for the series. When I first read the synopsis, I was intrigued. Who were the characters? Why were the children being pursued? What’s Nathan’s role in all of this? Why and What… those were the main words in my mind at that time, as well as while reading.

I found myself turning page after page, trying to learn more, loosing myself in the story and this version of the world. It was a rollercoaster of emotions and thoughts, in a balanced storytelling that makes me want to continuing reading the series.

It’s hard for me to talk about specific things I enjoyed, since I fear it may give spoilers. I can say I love the characters. Loved Nathan and loved Sally. I loved the interactions and the grows. I loved the way I empathize with them.

The plot was great. I’m very curious to see how the story will go next. And I loved that it was fast paced, full of action, and it was interesting. I never got bored.

Overall, although I’m no sci-fi expert, I do think this is an awesome book. For a start of a series it was amazing and, as I previous said, I can’t wait for more.

“Holding Out For A Hero” Review

Hello Friends!

I hope you guys are doing well this lovely Saturday. I will be reading all day but I had to come here this morning to share a new review.

Holding out for a Hero“, written by T. E. Kessler, is a Science-fiction romance, the first novel in the Jelvia: Not Human series.

I want to thank Rachel, at Rachel’s Random Resources, and T. E. Kessler for the eCopy of this book, and for allowing me to join in the fun and being a part of the blog tour with my honest review of the book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Holding Out For a Hero

Synopsis

Holding out for a Hero CoverWhen she was a child, her mother was murdered and subconsciously ever since, journalist Macy Shaw has been searching for a hero.

She found one, but the hero she found was a Jelvia.

Undeterred, she used her connections to go after the biggest story of her life.

Narcifer saved a woman by merely being a Jelvia—his presence causing terror and making the assailants flee.

And it amused him when his “heroism” created a national stir, so when a pretty little red-head asked to interview him for a story, Narcifer felt compelled to grant it to her, especially when she gave all the signals that she wanted more than a story.

However, on the night Narcifer inadvertently became a hero, he had been tracking a scientist with orders to kill, and strangely no matter where Narcifer’s line of investigation took him, his search always brought back to the red-headed journalist, Macy Shaw.

My Review

This was the first book I have ever read of this author, and when I saw that it was a sci-fi romance I knew I had to give it a shot and I quite enjoyed it. It wasn’t a Sci-fi novel as one would expect, since most people think of the genre as containing alien invasions or battleships in a intergalactic war, but it had certain sci-fi elements.

I was very intrigued about the differences of  T.E. Kessler’s Earth and our own reality. Especially with the fact that birth rates for humans are falling and those of Jelvias keep rising. That creates lots of possibilities in the future, and makes us wonder about the future.

In this book we follow Macy, a journalist fascinated by the Jelvias (a humanoid species that are stronger, faster and venomous). As we are taken on a journey, we discover more about the other species of non-humans. And of course, since it’s a romance, quite a steamy one, we get to meet Narcifer, a Jelvia man, and be as curious about our hero as Macy is.

P1070878There was a lot that I love about the book. It had a good balance in terms of pace and a good dose of mystery. Hell, I’m still wondering about the Jelvian society since it wasn’t fully explored in this book. It is the first novel and we are just getting and introduction and seeing some points about that part of world, so it’s perfectly acceptable to leave some things unanswered for now, because that makes me want to read more of this series.

I loved all the characters, especially Courtney to be honest. Also, I was very fascinated about the Jelvias, especially at the ending, that definitely left me wondering about the all society and the truth behind their actions.

Another element I loved about the story were the unexpected moments. Without giving spoilers, there were some moments that I could see where they were going to end up, and others that I did not see coming. That was something that made so focus on the book that I couldn’t put it down and didn’t even realized it was four am when I finished the book. One of those nights reading that I don’t regret at all!

Overall, it was a enjoyable read and I’m curious to read the next one so I can find out were that story is going to go, and what else is going to change in the entire world. If you want to read a sci-fi novel that has some erotic moments and some kinky scenes (as Narce would say), then this may be a good book for you.

My Review

This isn’t my first rodeo with Rachel McLean’s brilliant writing style, so when I saw that she had a new book coming up, I was so excited, especially because of the theme of this story. If you haven’t read the synopsis, then go read it so you can be as curious as I was.

This novel is a dystopian story, it happens in 2026, so it does feel close enough to make it scary, because in this new world there is no equality, and everything we have fought for is now just a memory.

It’s a scary thing to imagine, but every country has it’s own set of laws and let’s be honest, in Portugal Euthanasia has just been approved in parliament this week, when in other countries it’s been a legal practice for some years now. So things can change for better or for worse, and the social and political background of this story shows that.

P1070710Like I said, not the first book I’ve read of Rachel McLean, and every time I read one of her books I get surprised by the ideas she comes up with for her books. They are always at the edge of scary real and fiction, and of course the thrilling element just adds a powerful grip to my attention and mind, that takes the entire story to the next level.

As we follow these three women, we are led into such a rollercoaster, I was almost jumping from my seat, I couldn’t keep still, since I was so overwhelmed with the descriptions and the storyline. Such a thought provoking and intense novel that was brilliantly executed, with the way the characters were so developed and created that they felt real, and I could empathize with them and their thoughts, struggles and reasoning.

Overall, I was not even surprised I loved the book. I know Rachel McLean would captivate me from page one and so she did. Her style of writing and the fantastic way of transport us to a future that seems so real that scares me, her ability to create characters that we can immediately connect with no matter the situation, as just some of the things I love about this book and all of her books in general. And I totally recommend this book.

My Review

First of all, as soon as I read the synopsis of this novel I got a big smile on my face, because I could remember of the even that divided the world, all thanks to a particular (white-gold/black-blue) dress. I was one of those that saw it as white and gold, no idea about you guys, but message me about it. Anyway, when I saw that this was a story inspire about that event, I thought it was funny and interesting and I really wanted to know how the author was going to explain what happened in terms of the fantasy and fiction elements that he was incorporating in this alternative world and time line.

Since I was one of those that saw the white and gold, I felt even more invested in the story as I uncover the secrets and follow the White and Gold People in this storyline. It was quite a brilliant idea from the author and I was intrigued from page one.

We met plenty of characters that are very refreshing and interesting, and the subject that are talked about, besides the superpowers and the government action and the way society views those that are different that the ‘normality’, made me think. There was a sense of freedom for me when reading this book and thinking about the Goldies.

One thing I enjoyed was the portrait of relationships and the interactions between Goldies and Blueys. I quite liked seeing the cultural change and the way people deal with events and try to follow a new path after something major happen. It talks about a lot of things that are part of being human, our feelings (love, hate, fear, insecurities, …), our responsibilities, our freedom, our safety… Yes, there are sex scenes, there are battle scenes… That’s also part of our present and our reality, it has always been a part of us, why wouldn’t it make an appearance in this story?

Overall, I love the concept of the story and the thought provoking aspects in it, as well as the pace that may have started slow but kept climbing, never letting go of my mind, and by grabbing my attention it allows me to enjoy each page and each unexpected scene in a very enjoyable and fun way, that made me feel as if I was part of the plot as a character instead of just a outsider looking in.

One thought that this book left me with was: Maybe I should own my Goldie side and enjoy life. Are you a Goldie or a Bluey?

Do I recommend this novel? If you like Urban fantasies, and are intrigued about the all dress craziness, as well as want to see where the author took that idea… then I recommend it, but be open minded, be curious and get ready.

Q & A

Q: In a few words, how would you describe Deadwave?

A: Deadwave is a cyberpunk science fiction novel with elements of young adult (protagonist is nineteen) and the action and pacing of a high-octane thriller novel. Deadwave can be compared to the books Ready Player One and Altered Carbon in many ways and at its core tells the story of Sam in his quest to win the Deadwave World Championship, where the world’s top competitors at the virtual reality, zombie, battle royale video game all compete to win the prize of ten million dollars. However, Sam also has to try and escape a secretive group of wealthy people attempting to kill him to access the patents to a world-changing technology that his father’s company owns.

Q: How long will the Conspiracy Chronicles be?

A: At the time of writing this, it will certainly be at least five books, but likely much longer. The first three novels, Deadwave , Blood Brothers , and The Last Migration , will be released in the fall of 2019 with the next few novels being released in the spring of 2020.

Q: What inspired you to write Deadwave?

A: In many ways, the entire Conspiracy Chronicles was necessary for me to write in order to flesh out the backstory of my first series Control Freakz. This ended up turning into a much longer and complex story than I originally anticipated that I plan to form the foundation of a fictional universe that will encompass many different series. This series in particular draws on my fascination and passion with video games, virtual reality, and virtual worlds and their impact on the future of our world.

Q: The video game in Deadwave feels so real. What inspired you to come up with a video game that includes zombies, avatars fighting to the death, and a host of abandoned locations?

A: Deadwave for me is a culmination of all my favorite games into one. I’ve always loved sports, and used to play basketball and baseball for many years so the virtual reality portion of the game allows them to compete using the motion of their entire bodies just as an athlete would.

Zombies for me are something that I have also always loved. Some of my favorite video games are Tell Tale’s The Walking Dead and State of Decay which both feature zombies and for me it was just natural to incorporate it into the game. The battle royale portion of the game certainly draws inspiration from Fortnite and Apex Legends, but my original fascination with the concept actually comes from my love for The Hunger Games . And all the abandoned places present in the maps in the game represent one of my favorite hobbies of urban exploring. Going to abandoned mental hospitals, offices, movie theaters, and many other locations is one of my favorite hobbies and something that I have done for years and intend to continue to do for years to come.

Q: The relationship between Sam and his father is central in Deadwave . What made you choose to highlight this?

A: Throughout the entirety of the Conspiracy Chronicles my goal is to explore the bonds between men and boys at a deeper level. I feel that the mental health of men and the relationships we have is often understated or left unnoted in literature and popular culture. With Deadwave specifically, I seek to show the pressure that many young boys feel to live up to their father’s expectations, and likewise the often crushing pressure their father’s place upon their own children. I would be lying if I said that I didn’t draw some inspiration from my own relationship with my father. Yet, he isn’t strict and abusive like James [Sam’s dad] is in Deadwave, which I am thankful for (many father’s I know are to their children and spouses though).

However, the view Sam has of his father, of being this unbelievable man who he idolizes is similar to how I viewed my father. But when Sam finds out the truth about his father, and sees his darker side, he finally sees that his father isn’t this unbelievable guy and he begins to have a love-hate relationship with him. The arc of their relationship continues, and I won’t explain anything further just to not give too much away, but there is a deeper message about all the relationships present in Deadwave, and the subsequent books in the series, and it really needs to be read to be fully understood.

Q: Riva, a character Sam grows very close to in Deadwave, is the only top Deadwave player in the world that is a girl. Why did you choose to have the world of Deadwave dominated by men?

A: I did this as an indictment of both the current professional esports world and the sports world at large. Right now almost all of the top video game streamers and most well known athletes in the world are men. Men are paid much more than women and receive more fame for equal work. The world of Deadwave is still dominated by men because, frankly, I don’t see this changing anytime soon (I really hope it improves!), but also because it allowed me to highlight the downsides to a male dominated world.

However, Riva is an anomaly. She is better than all the boys competing in Deadwave and has more fame and money than all of them. She to me is a fictional example of what I hope one day is a living example of a woman, and a woman of color at that, absolutely dominating in a world that she isn’t even “supposed” to be in. Whether this happens in politics, sports, or business I hope that one day both young boys and young girls can idolize women for having great success in a playground built by the boys. I actually think this will happen in the very near future, and I know that tens of millions of women are capable of this, if they were just given equal opportunity in a world full of misogyny.

Riva in my eyes symbolizes the strength millions of women are capable if given the opportunity, and due to the democratizing effects of the internet just a change in public perception is all it might take.

Q: The unreleased technology Life Pods in Deadwave allows people to live in virtual worlds forever. Do you foresee a similar technology coming to light in just fifteen years as described in Deadwave?

A: I certainly do. I don’t know about in the next fifteen years, but I think with things like the Blue Brain Project that seeks to map our brains and the rise of quantum computing, at some point in the near future we will have the capability of uploading our minds to computers and living in virtual worlds. When this happens I have no clue how humanity responds and this question is at the core of the conflict in the Conspiracy Chronicles, and as you will come to see, yeah… lots of stuff goes down.

I won’t say that I foresee our future headed the same way it is in the Conspiracy Chronicles but given the way corporate America is set up, and the fact that the issues of wealth inequality and climate change continue to grow, I picture some negative effects coming to rise from such a technology. Deadwave is just the beginning of a larger narrative that I hope serves as a thrilling and entertaining warning to reform our current world so that we can maximize the positive implications of technologies similar to Life Pods and reduce the negative implications as much as possible.

Q: Deadwave is your fourth published novel. What have you learned from your prior books?

A: Like many authors, I have learned from my mistakes, and I think as long as I am alive I will continue to refine my work and improve my ability as a storyteller. I really learned from my first series how to create a story people emotionally care about from the beginning, craft more likable characters, and hone my narrative skills in a way that is not too introspective and focuses more on what the characters do versus what they are thinking.

Q: How old are you at the time of writing Deadwave?

A: I was 17 years old while writing and publishing that novel, and at the time of writing this I am still 17 years old.

Q: What encouraged you to pursue writing in a relatively early stage of your life?

A: For me age isn’t really a factor in anything. What allows someone to tell a great story in my mind is the stories and experiences the writer has experienced in their lifetime. Although I may not have as much stories to share as some others who have more years on their belt than me, I have experienced the ups and downs in life, experienced pure pain and true joy, and from my wildest moments to my most mundane ones I have always maintained an acute self-awareness that has allowed me to develop my world view and a deep set of experiences to build off when crafting my stories.

Q: Since you are still a teenager, are you in high school?

A: I just graduated highschool this past June and am currently amidst a gap year from my education. I live in the United States, specifically Charleston, South Carolina, so after finishing twelfth grade the “normal” thing to do is either to get a job or increasingly to go to college. I don’t feel that this path is right for me though, and if I’m being honest I’m not sure exactly what is. I just know I love storytelling, and know that this is what I want to do for the foreseeable future and maybe even the rest of my life. As such, I decided to take a gap year from my education to pursue writing full time and really get to see what being an author is like day in and day out, and also use this opportunity to expand my desire to storytell into different mediums such as Youtube.

Q: Share with us three things about your books (not spoilers) that most don’t know.

A: The abandoned places they go to in the video game in Deadwave are based off abandoned places I have been to in real life. The character James in Deadwave (his backstory will be fleshed out in later novels) is inspired from my old dream to be a nanoengineer and develop nanorobots. The concept behind Control Freakz was inspired by the book Radical Abundance by Eric Drexler and the only reason I even got interested in the book was by being introduced to nerdy topics by the Youtube channel SciShow run by Hank Green.

Q: What writers have you always looked up to?

A: Dang, I could list so much right here. I’ll keep this to my top two. Alexandra Bracken is someone that I admire. She is the first author I met in person about four years ago at a book signing at YALL Fest in Charleston. She was so sweet and personable and to really get to meet an author for the first time made me think about what it would be like to be in her shoes. Of course I also loved her books, especially the Darkest Minds Series and they still stand as my favorite YA Dystopian books of all time which is the genre that my first book series, Control Freakz, falls under. My favorite writer of all time though is by and far Stephen King. I love the darker vibe to most of his thrillers, and how he incorporates science fiction and fantasy elements into the present day world. He is really a pioneer in transrealism literature, and that is a genre in which I hope to make inroads into myself one day in the near future. He also creates characters that are absolutely iconic, and for that reason alone I think he is the best American writer of our time and someone who I admire greatly.

Q: What can we expect from you in the future?

A: A lot. Without getting ahead of myself, I will say that I am in the process of trying to create a larger universe with my first two series. At the moment I have three more series and two standalone novels planned in the same world as the Conspiracy Chronicles that I call Future Realities Inked. One is set in the 2060s and another is a steampunk novel set in the 1980s (not a traditional steampunk novel but the kind of steampunk that Stranger Things has some elements of). I plan to experiment with the genres I write in and the style of the narratives but the core of my writing style will always be there. I also will be releasing seven books during my gap year, and continuing to refine my video making ability which is a medium I will look to use to tell stories and share my adventures in the near future.

Q: Where can we find more about you and your books?

A: The best place to go is to my website at www.mevansinked.com. There you can find my Instagram ( @mevansinked ) and Youtube Channel where I share my insight on the world, futurist topics, and of course tell my own story in regards to my gap year. Also, I have links to all my books on my website, along with my store where you can purchase signed books directly from me. On my website you will also find my newsletter where I share the most up to date information on my books, events, and future releases, along with exclusive videos from me guiding you on my mission to live boundlessly and help others to do so as well.

Q: I want to read Deadwave! Where can I find it?

A: You can always go to the library on my website where you can find links to everywhere it is sold including access to my online store where you can purchase signed copies directly from me: https://mevansinked.com/book/deadwave/

Paul’s debut picture book, Praxx and the Ringing Robot, won second prize in the ‘Picture Books 5 and Younger’ category at the Purple Dragonfly Book Awards 2017. The book trailer also won first place in the ‘book trailer’ category at the Royal Dragonfly Book Awards later that year.

My Review

P1060488.JPGThis is the first book I have ever read of Paul Ian Cross and I liked this book a lot. It’s the first book of a new series and that means it’s the introduction of the world and the main character and all the companions and people around her. Which of course came with a lot of questions and various open doors for the future of the series, and I will be keeping it in mind because I’m curious.

I liked the main character (her name is just intriguing and give this sci-fi vibe that made sense because of genre). Engella is a complex character that I could connect with. It was fun and intriguing to read how she acted and reacted in all the different situations she ended up in and how she interacted with the all the characters along the way.

P1060482I also liked the plot and the world building a lot. I found it interesting, since it was a take on the time traveling aspect with some new and unique components that made this world be mysterious and really in a different time. So, of course I was glued to the screen while reading this book.

Overall, this was a great start to a sci-fi series. With mystery, action, complex world and amazingly well written characters that bring out the story more.

My Review

I read this book a while back, but I was under a lot of stress because of my internship, nevertheless I took notes so I could talk about this book once I had free time. Then life got crazy and my schedule got all mixed up and out of order, but I’m here now.

P1050217

When I started reading this book I was curious. Although it was a shorter book, only 149 pages, and at that time I was reading bigger books, I was still intrigued. Overall I liked it, let me tell you why.

The plot was interesting. I haven’t read or even reviewed many sci-fi books, and certainly not that many book with time traveling in them, so that aspect of the book was fascinating. It seems that the author did his research and the way he talk about the particular aspects of the time traveling in the world he created was a positive point for me.  I could understand the science behind it.

Besides that, there were descriptions that made the book a bit more colorful and real. And that made it entertaining. Then again, since it was a shorter novel, I found it to have a quick pace sometimes that made it jump-y to me and I couldn’t fully connect with the characters, because I wanted to know more about them so I could understand them and the world.

Although I would have loved to explore more of all the peculiarities of the book and bond with the characters more, I liked the book and see the potential in the storyline of this series. So I wish all the best to Evan and the future books.

“The Gathering” Review

Hello Friends!

I hope you are all having a great Wednesday. I’m having fun with my family since it’s the last day my uncle, aunt and cousins are in Portugal. Thankfully I going to France in less than a month. Anyway, I will have a busy day.

Besides staying home with my family, I will be preparing some blog posts, but before I get back to work, here is a new review.

I bring you “The Gathering“, the first book in The Uprising Series, written by Bernadette Giacomazzo. It’s a Dystopian Fiction book, published this year. And I want to thank Rachel, at Rachel’s Random Resources, and Bernadette for the eCopy of the book and for allowing me to be a part of this blog tour and give my honest review.

In The Gathering, Jamie Ryan has defected from the Cabal and has joined his former brothers-in-arms — Basile Perrinault and Kanoa Shinomura — to form a collective known as The Uprising. My Review

P1060427I haven’t read that many dystopian fiction books (two or three books I think), so I grab the opportunity to read this book and open up more my book experience. Although my expectation on a dystopian book didn’t really exist, since I just wanted to experience a genre I haven’t read much, I quite enjoyed “The Gathering“.

This book is the first one in the series, and it gave us the foundation of the world and the characters. It doesn’t give us all the answers, but it sets the pace and the tone for the storyline. Follows several important character through out the story, in a short time, with flashbacks and memories that allow us to understand the events and the relationships between the main characters and the rest of the world.

P1060094Like I said before, I didn’t really have any expectations, not because I didn’t like the blurb or was intrigued… I was curious and I wonder what would happen in the story and how the author would take her book. But as for the dystopian elements, I had no idea what to look for or expect really, so the book was refreshing. I heard people talking about Dystopias as having a darker element, in here there was that touch of darkness and realism that touched our reality, because it felt connected to our lives right now. So I kind of liked the feeling of dejá vu because it felt like real.

P1060439Because the book is told from multiples point of views, that sense of reality became much more evident, I suppose. It makes it possible for the reader to understand were the characters stand, think and dream about their lives and the world and society they belong. And in this book I do believe it was a perfect choice, because it open our understanding about different people and different ways of life.

Then there is the rock ‘n’ roll element that made different from every other books I have read, in any genre. I think that was a great touch to bring in a story. And then there are all those characters that intrigued me, specially Evanora, she’s my favorite.

Do I recommend this book? Of course, even if you don’t read dystopian books, you should give this first book a shot and at least read it and see if the foundations and world building of this story makes you intrigued to read the following books in the series, when they are published.
