Minha Review

Em frente!

Mesmo quando não vês

mais do que o ontem, talvez

possas abrir as cortinas

e pintar a aguarelas as memórias findas

e escrever degraus em verso.

Ir, in Vento de Rita Palma Nascimento

Poesia…

“Common People” Review

Hello Friends!

If you have been following my social media you know that a couple weeks ago I posted an article on a Medium publication called “The Open Bookshelf”, and this article is my review of Common People. Still it’s a different since it’s more of an in depth and thought provoking reflection about my opinion on the book.

You can check it out, it’s called “Saudade, nostalgia and the beauty of connection“.

Still, I wanted to leave one of my usual reviews here on the blog, so enjoy this one as well.

Common People“, an anthology edited by Kit de Waal, was published on May 2019 by Unbound.

Synopsis

43799759. sy475 Common People is a collection of essays, poems and pieces of personal memoir, bringing together sixteen well-known writers from working class backgrounds with an equal number of brand new as-yet-unpublished writers from all over the UK.

Too often, working class writers find that the hurdles they have to leap are higher and harder to cross than for writers from more affluent backgrounds. Common People will see writers who have made that leap reach back to give a helping hand to those coming up behind.

We read because we want to experience lives and emotions beyond our own, to learn, to see with others’ eyes – without new working class voices, without the vital reflection of real lives, or role models for working class readers and writers, literature will be poorer.

Working-class stories are not always tales of the underprivileged and dispossessed.

Common People is a collection of essays, poems and memoir written in celebration, not apology: these are narratives rich in barbed humor, reflecting the depth and texture of working-class life, the joy and sorrow, the solidarity and the differences, the everyday wisdom and poetry of the woman at the bus stop, the waiter, the hairdresser.

Here, Kit de Waal brings together thirty-three established and emerging writers who invite you to experience the world through their eyes, their voices loud and clear as they reclaim and redefine what it means to be working class.

My Review

P1070747Common People: An Anthology of Working Class Writers” edited by Kit de Waal and written by several authors, is a collection of essays, poems and pieces of personal memoir.

Each author records, on the pages of the book, their opinions, experience and working class background. Each different from the others, but they all provoke our minds and emotions.

Being an anthology and bringing to light stories and poems loaded with emotions and opinions, I read this book in a measured way, reflecting each chapter and each passage.

Coming from a Working Class family, much of what was described I was able to relate to my life and the reports of my family members. This established a connection with the voices of the authors and their experiences, appealing to the memories of my past and a feeling of Saudade.

P1070746In Jodie Russian-Red’s story, The Funeral and the Wedding, I saw my family painted on the pages. It transported me to a past that is still alive in my heart and mind, and not faded by time.

These small moments, which connect us to what is told, are something I consider fundamental in a story. Empathy and connection with the narrators, with the experiences, and consequently, with ourselves.

For those who want to get out of their comfort zone and like Anthologies, I highly recommend this book. Despite being written about Britain, the voice of the working class travels across countries and continents.

I tend to draw to novels that draw away from love stories and more towards suspense and personal experiences shared from one person to the next. I love books that make you feel for the character and give you a sense of fulfillment when you claim their happiness as you’re own.

I am always busy with school, work and with my family but I always leave time out of my day to relax with a book and some tea. For me, it’s a form of escape from the world that I am surrounded by, where I can escape to a world where I can draw a connection to the book characters and their stories.

My Review

“Don’t let the voices scare you away.

Sometimes,

They are all we need to hear

To keep going.”

This isn’t the first book I’ve read of Chelsea Girard’s, and with each book I feel like I find a new favorite book of hers. And this one is on my top list of poetry books. And you will understand why once you keep reading this review.

I loved that after all the poetry books so far, she still made it fresh and lovely. It had a different tone from the other poems she has written before, it still was empowering and strong, but it was different. It felt powerful in a electric way, that pulled me to each word with such a beautiful melody, that only Chelsea can create.

This may be my favorite poetry book of hers so far. I love ‘Only Human‘, but this one is beside it on the scale. It resonated with me, but it wasn’t a past me, it wasn’t an empowering and nostalgia because my life and all I went through connect with the poems… No, it was more than that. In this book, more than in the others, I felt the present me connecting more than remembering the past and feeling like I’m not alone.

“We all have to change one day.

Sometimes for others,

Sometimes for ourselves,

And sometimes for the future.

This is my story.

The one I changed

To live

To thrive

And to survive.”

Of course, I still had this feeling of togetherness. As if I’m part of a group of people that feel and believe in the same things. Because the poems in this book, just like in the previous ones, Chelsea Girard gave us something to debate and to feel, and definitely, to be together in this journey that is life.

Life is about the past, the present and the future. It’s about our journeys, about each obstacle, about each lesson, about society and ourselves. It’s about how we deal with the consequences of our decisions, and the repercussions of other peoples actions upon us. It’s about the little things that we experience, as much as the big ones. About smelling flowers, planting tress, listening to birds in the morning or the cars that pass by. About surviving, but also about enjoying each step, because surviving is not living, but sometimes we found ourselves in a mess that can only leave us space and time to be able to fight on survive mode. And it’s all okay.

“I found myself

Only the person I found

Had been lost

But was thankful

To be found.”

It’s okay to mess up. It’s okay to give second chances, specially to ourselves. It’s okay to cry and laugh. It’s okay to take a chance and risk everything for one moment in time. It’s okay to feel lost sometimes.

I sometimes just relax in bed and feel like I’m drifting away into space, losing myself in an immense variety of feelings I cannot fully control, and when I get back, when always end up find a piece of myself that I didn’t realize I had lost. Sometimes that tiny piece is a memory, other times it’s the strength to tackle a new obstacle or a new adventure. And there are times it’s something deeper that I never talk about and keep close to my heart, even right now, after being taken on a thought provoking journey.

This is way I love this book even more than the others. “I’m The Monster” gave me different feelings, made me think of what I’m doing now, and feeling at this moment, more than what I felt in the past. The magical powers in her poems connect situations in all realms of time and space, it gives us enormous strength as well as this calm.

In the pages of her book I encountered a place where I could think. A place I could metaphorically sit down and let my heart break, and then pick up the pieces and put everything back together. A place where I could heal as feeling validated. And in the end, it was a place to the emotions go free and, with them, fly.

“You were never invisible.”

My Review

Let’s just stop for a second and appreciate this cover and the fact that there is a new poetry book by Chelsea Girard. Okay, everyone ready? Because I have a lot to say.

P1070489First of all, even before I started reading I knew I would be an emotional wreck once I started, because from past reading experience with this author’s books that was what ended up happening. And I was right. I was crying, smiling, feeling empowered, inspired, connected with my memories and I felt as if someone finally got what I had been trying to say.

That’s the power of Chelsea Girard’s melodic writing style. She knows how to takes us on this journey through our own heart, soul and mind, by giving us not only food for thought, but also by provoking emotions and calling memories. That’s something I have always loved about her books and this one was another collection of poems that touched my heart.

I may have broken down in front of you
But that doesn’t mean
I broke down because of you.

~ Chelsea Girard

A lot of poems took me down memory lane. I remembered my past, I thought about my own experiences, and some poems connected with that as if they were my words, the words for the feelings I had at that time. Other poems made me think about those memories in a new light.

There are some poems here she was like redacted, obscured, most of the text but some chosen words. I loved that concept in the book, because sometimes we do that in our lives, we obscure some parts of what we are feeling or thinking. At least, I know I do that.

P1070488I was also inspired, and I have had new ideas for stories I’m working on, because of the emotions I felt, because the poems connected with a characters I had in my mind, because I started to thinking about something I hadn’t wonder about before. So the poems were thought provoking to me.

Overall, I loved this collection of poems. I loved how I felt connected to this energy, this essence that is part of all of us.

I felt calm in the end, after the rollercoaster of emotions, memories and thoughts, I felt at home. Just like I feel after talking to my mom or my best friends. I felt like that because it was like I had poured out my heart and had someone that loved me beside me, listening, giving me hugs and understanding what I could and couldn’t say out-loud.

An amazing and powerful book that I highly recommend. That’s it…

Don’t forget to check out the author’s Instagram  page for updates. And don’t forget to add the book to your Goodreads TBR.

My Review

I haven’t review many poetry books, but it’s a genre that I like to read, especially when I feel a connection to the poems I’m reading. In Shruti Agrawal’s book we can find poems, thoughts, quotes… It’s a very beautiful book that talks about life and the emotions we all have, so it talks about love, acceptance, self-reflection, healing and an overall connection with the reader and this thought provoking reading.

Personally, I could connect emotional in a deep level to some of the poems. Not all of them, because some were stronger to me because I could see myself in them, but those I didn’t relate to, I could still understand and feel empathy for the person that does feel that. So, even thought my personal experiences made a connection with some poems, my empathy could connect with everything, and that’s good.

p1070256There were some poems that I didn’t connect based on a past experience, but because they made me think about what it was talking about and that was something I also liked about the book, it make us thing. The reflection aspect of the book is one of the elements I really loved because it meant even more to me than the connection I felt with my past and experiences.

Like I said before, this book talks about different perspectives in life. And the authors is young, so to see the depth in the poems and the insights in them, makes me applaud her for her beautiful, simple and magical writing, and I hope she keeps going so we – the readers – can enjoy more books.

Overall, I loved the book and was very happy in the end, although I would love to read a couple more pages of poems, because I would love to keep reflecting and take a journey inside myself as I read more poems and thoughts.

My Review

(Edited the review to add some extra thoughts.)

P1070031I have been very excited about this book since Chelsea Girard started to give us glimpses of the book. From the dreamy and touchy cover, to all the poems in the book… this was an amazing poetry book, that although it marks the end of the poetry series, it give us (the readers) an emotional journey, bringing us connection and energy.

“Be the unlikely hero of your own story.” Is one quote that was powerful, hopeful, empowering, and true. And that’s just one verse in this book full of poems and sentences that are a mix of emotion and strength. I could feel the connection to Chelsea and to everyone that have been dealing with mental health, because I went through it too.

P1070014We all have demons, some are related to mental health, others are daily life issues that have changed our hearts, lives, dreams or path. That’s why this book, and all the others in the poetry series, touched me so much. The author have a way with words, and she’s just writing about her experiences and what she sees, feels and believes, and even that sounds like she was in my mind and wrote what I felt and believe. That’s why I think this book connects people.

P1070022But I could feel that connection via our strength and humanity. Yes, because this book is different from the previous poetry book in the series. Where the other one was emotional and melodic, this one is that plus strength. And it show us that we are all human and that it’s okay to feel sad, okay to love, okay to feel, okay to dream, okay to have a bad day or a good day, and okay to enjoy the little things in life. To just be who we are.

I could share many poems and quotes that could serve as an example of what I feel on my daily life, or that could show you guys what I mean about the humanity aspect that I saw in this book. But I’m not doing that because I want you guys to go read this book and feel whatever you need to feel and see in the poems.

Then there are the illustrations. The illustrator did an amazing job. The illustration enriches the book and they are amazingly done and there is this simplicity and beauty in each line, each illustration, that connects them to the poems and caught my eye every time I saw them.

P1070009For me it was about connection and humanity. About being who we are and still being human and part of our community. About enjoy every day and never give up our dream despite the thought in our head, and despite the hard and bad days. As a Social Educator, I could see many activities being done based on some of the poems in this book and I would honestly love to do that in a school.

Overall, I loved this book. A book that gave me strength and I didn’t even realized that I had some tension I needed to let go off and resolve until I read some poems that made me think. So, it was a thought provoking, melodic, empowering, emotional and human book.

Hello Friends!

A couple days ago I shared with you the cover and blurb of the book I was slowing reading. A poetry book from Chelsea Girard, called “Sincerely, Me“, strong and emotional, and definitely inspiring and empowering.

Thank you Chelsea to let me read your book! Thank you for the eCopy in exchange for my honest review.

Blurb

P1050988Sincerely, Me is a collection of poetry that is derived from the mind of an anxiety filled young woman who wants nothing more than to express herself in a creative way. This book is a journey through the mind as you will encounter hardships, mistakes, love and broken hearts as you read through the pages of Sincerely, Me.
This is the second book in a three part series of poetry and yet again, another story to be told. Though these pages, I hope you become empowered, loved and feel more than just a walking statue, just waiting to break free from your already crumbling structure. Build yourself up and never believe you’re anything less than the beautiful swan.

Purchase from Amazon.

Don’t forget to go give Chelsea some love.

My Review

p1050990.jpgI think I have reviewed or thought about poetry since I was in high school, but I’m happy that I went to this journey. Happy, yes. Because the poems touched my heart, but I will get to that in a second.

First of all, I consider Chelsea my friend, my bookstagram friend. I have talked to her and we have exchange some thoughts and experiences. I can’t say I know everything about her, or that she knows everything about me, because I believe no one truly knows everything about someone. Nonetheless, when you read a poetry book, especially one as strong and vulnerable as this one, you feel connected.

P1050989Sincerely, Me” is an mind blowing and eye opening book, that is real. It couldn’t be more real than it is. It made me so full of emotion. It made me cry, feel empowered, connected, like I wasn’t alone, and mostly I felt like it was okay.

I always was a bit ashamed of my past, and that didn’t helped me in getting my self-esteem and confidence up and strong. I felt weak, and I was always saying to myself “the past is in the past” and I wouldn’t talk about it. It took me almost ten years to learn that talking helps, that talking can help others because maybe that will create connections and feel less alone.

P1050994This book and Chelsea’s way of writing poetry does that. The way she expresses herself and her experiences touches our hearts and create those connections and in the end by talking about this book, by sharing our thoughts and experiences because Chelsea’s poetry opens that platform, we will create a network. And in the end, I hope we can have the support we all need, the understanding without saying much.

Poetry was never my strength, but I love reading it. Chelsea’s writing comes from her heart and that makes it so much powerful and that’s one of the many reasons why I loved it. For that, I can’t truly review this book, I can only recommend it and hope you all can feel the emotion and connection.

Isn’t this cover so beautiful? The previous one was amazing too, but I like this one better, it just touches my soul and it goes so well with the poetry.
