“A Murder of Crows” Review

Hello Friends!

I’m still trying to update my reviews, since there are some reviewing copies and ARCs that I got this year and last year that I have read, but unfortunately haven’t posted my review yet. So you may keep seeing posts this month, more than one post a day, hopefully, if I can make it.

Nevertheless, this is one of those reviews whose book I read in 2018.

A Murder of Crows“, written by A. Kirke, is a Victorian fantasy, murder-mystery, the first novel in the The Ravenscourt Tragedies Series, published by Dying Arts Press on November 1st 2018.

I received a complimentary copy of this book thanks to A. Kirke and Dying Arts Press. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Synopsis

42036409.jpgA dead father.

A missing Spirit.

An ancient manor with way too many locked doors.

But Abigail Crowe won’t let locked doors, corsets, or the straight-laced rules of Victorian society get in the way of finding the truth behind her father’s death. Of course, where illegal magic is involved, things are rarely as simple as they appear. Screams in the night, an insane gardener, and a murder blamed on her late father are only the beginning. Could her father actually be a murderer? What is Uncle Edward hiding in the attic? And perhaps most importantly—which family secrets are worth keeping locked up?

About the Author

Anastasia Kirke is a middle-grade and teen fantasy writer.

She lived a significant portion of her life in a distant mountain valley between cloud-wreathed peaks, where she graduated from a school that is not nearly as cool as Hogwarts (though at times it came close). Her current travels have brought her to an island where the hot is too hot and the cold is too cold and there’s nowhere inbetween.

A Literary Omnivore, she is a fan all things bookish and strange. Her favorite things include: cats, tea, classical music of the Romantic Era, and that feeling you get when a story gives you goosebumps.

My Review

This is the first novel in a series, and I always expect to be some information that is yet to be revealed, and I wasn’t surprised to have that interest to read the next one as soon as I finished up this book.

I read the story back in 2018, and even a year later I could remember the plot, the characters and the feel to this novel, even without checking out my review notes. That happens because it was different and it had a spooky feeling that reminded me of something that I can’t put my finger on, but that made me curious to turn each page and read more.

I liked the characters and their interactions, and I’m quite curious to know what will happen next in the series and where will the author take this world and it’s people, because the ambiance of the story and the descriptions made me question some things while I was reading and I want more.

Another thing I enjoyed was the fantasy/paranormal element in the novel. I feel that it added that spookiness to the story and I love a good book that is dark, has secrets and that has it’s characters looking for the truth and the answers to all their questions. And this book had that, even though I had some theories, I felt determined to uncover the mysteries.

I loved the title of the book, it was quite cleaver, and although the cover isn’t my favorite cover, I appreciate the elements that it has and the darkness. Overall, I enjoyed the storyline and Abigail and all the other characters with whom she interact and has a relationship.

Author Bio

Rachel J Bonner is the author of the four book Choices and Consequences series, the first of which, Strand of Faith, is due out in November 2018.

Getting a degree in engineering, followed by a career in accountancy is probably not a conventional path to becoming an author, particularly in paranormal romance.  Rachel says that, although accountancy isn’t anything like as boring as everyone thinks, writing is a lot more fun.  When not writing, she can be found walking in the beautiful countryside near where she lives, which has influenced much of the scenery in her books, or shooting things with her local archery club.  Target shooting only, honest.  Nothing to worry about.

She also enjoys swimming, eating chocolate chip cookies and growing aromatic herbs, especially thyme and rosemary.  It’s no coincidence that her heroine likes the same things.

My Review

If you have been reading my reviews, you know I have read the previous books in this series, so I was very excited to be able to read this one as well.

“Weave of Love” continues were “Thread of Hope” left off. The world keeps on building and I loved it, as well as the characters development, that seems to never disappoint and keeps things as interesting as before.

I honestly don’t even know what to say without giving spoilers. Like I said before, this novel is part of a series, and I wouldn’t recommend you to read it unless you have read the series in order, because that way you will understand the characters actions because you know and understand their past, as well as their ideologies, needs, goals and fears.

The amazing things about this book is that the author didn’t run away from the flow of the other books. As soon as I started reading I felt like I had never left this world and this story, despite the months between the time I have read the books, I was still fully into it and curious.

Overall, I keep loving the main characters more with each book, and of course it’s always intriguing to find out new information and see what else is going to happen in a story that has us this focus. It was a job well done by Rachel J. Bonner, because she grabbed my attention each time.

“Memórias de um Vampiro” Review

Hello Friends!

Leaving this message to my English only speakers friends and followers, as a warning since this is going to be a post in Portuguese.

To my Portuguese friends and followers… Enjoy!

Terceiro, as personagens…

My Review

As you all by know by now, I love paranormal romances and although this one is the first book by Lisa Kessler that I read, I really need to read more of her books in the future because I loved this one.

This is the first book in a series that can be read as a standalone. It was an amazing start of a series and after reading it, I’m very curious to know more about this series and what next will happen in this world.

This novel follows Melanie and Nate in this romance that takes us right alongside the characters through a mystery and paranormal connection. It was a journey that was different, with a concept and world building that made me very curious. And although I don’t want to give any spoilers about the plot, I can talk about the characters.

Mel and Nate were amazing characters. I can’t help my love for detectives no matter the kind of genre the novel is, and Nate was dreamy and just an amazing character. Then there is Mel, that made me laugh because my goddaughter’s name is Melanie, despite that, Mel has this personality that I could get and her past and actions were interesting and I connected with her in some ways. I loved all the moments of interaction between them, because the romance wasn’t unbelievable, and the characters had dreams, plans, flaws, demons, qualities and determination and when they were together that is visible too.

Overall, I loved it. It had action, mystery, romance, paranormal qualities, Greek mythology, a plot that was difference from what I read in the past, with characters that were developed and kept growing and felt true and real. The fact that this is the first in a series means that there is much more to uncover yet, and that makes me even happier.

Lisa Kessler brought a breath of fresh air to the paranormal romance genre, or at least to my month because I needed something exciting in the genre that I love so much. So my July was perfect, not only because of all the books I have read, but especially because of this book that made my lunch breaks fantastically entertaining.

Like I said before I will be reading more of Lisa Kessler, especially because I had her books on my TBR already and after reading this book I’m even more excited and in love with the all idea and  with her books. So I highly recommend then.

About Author

Sometimes I still shake my head at myself! Me and sci-fi?
“Never,” I would have said, just a few years ago! I am much too caught up in the here and now for that. When I think about how big the universe is, and how small we all seem in comparison, I feel nothing but awe. In my writing, my passion goes to the creatures who live at the edge of our world. Aliens, werewolves, panther shifters, vampires – all of them fascinate me. That’s why I try, with the help of my keyboard, to breathe a life into them.

My Review

This is not my first book by Jenny Foster, but the other ones I have read were sci-fi, and this one was a paranormal romance. And for those that don’t know me, I love Paranormal Romances, and if Jenny Foster had already convince me with her sci-fi romance novels… This one was just as amazing!

This storyline follows Hope and Ash. Although it was the second book, it can be a read as a standalone and I really do want to read book one so I can learn even more about the pack and this world and the characters, because it was such a wonderful book that I need to know more.

I find myself wondering about a lot of characters, because this book was just the tip of the iceberg for me. It’s just the beginning and certainly not enough. Hope and Ash were so cute and I just know some other characters deserve just as much love and happiness. It was so much fun to read about their story and see them change and connect and see all the emotions they were having.

I loved all the growth, the interactions between the characters, the love and romance, the friendship, the action and suspense, the little mysteries and the overall feeling I got that I was starting a new book and entering a new world. And honestly who don’t love a Paranormal Romance series.

Fast pace and amazing scenes that made me excited each page. And I couldn’t stop reading the book and ended up reading it during my bus drive back home. I can only hope that Jenny Foster will write another book in this world.

My Review

“Thread of Hope” is the second book in the series and it continues the storyline in book one, so before you read this review, know that I recommend you to read the previous book. That way you will understand the story and the characters actions and background fully.

In this second novel, we keep following Perry Prospero and Leonie’s life as they take another step up on their relationship. And of course, with that step come the unfolding of new information and brings, like the title of the series says, “Choices and Consequences”.

Honestly, I love how the characters are developing and how the relationships, interactions and all the secrets are connecting and proving to be even more important to the all underlining of the story and plot. It’s been quite an exciting, interesting, thought-provoking, emotional journey that will continue in book three.

The concept of this series and the world that the author created is quite amazing and unique in various way, at least for me. I quite enjoyed it and loved how the writing style and descriptions grabbed me and got me to travel this world with the characters and feel like I’m part of their group, learning with them and dealing with all the consequences of our actions, because seriously, that’s what life is about.

Overall, I loved it and can’t wait to keep reading more because I have no idea what will happen next and where Rachel J. Bonner is going to take the characters.

“The Girl From Our Moon: Entanglement” Review

Hello Friends!

P1070259It’s Friday! And I’m finally here to share my review of Rebecca A. Bishop‘s book, “The Girl From Our Moon: Entanglement“, also know to some as “Luna“.

Some of you may know from the post last weekend about the live, that Rebecca is my friend and I had the pleasure to read her book and promote her in Instagram. Beckie is also a blogger and Vegan Eco-Conscious young woman that put her beliefs and thought provoking questions in, not only her blog, but also her novel.

Thank you Rebecca for allowing me to read your first book in exchange for my honest review.

Synopsis

TGFOM.pngA harmonious civilisation of angels live on the colourful and idealistic planet Venus.
However, one wild and comical rebel does not fit into this picture. The spontaneous angel Luna, is regular gossip throughout the galaxy, due to her continuous need to break the universal laws. Finally Luna is served punishment and booted from heaven.

Arch Angel Michael has sent her on a quest, to find Professor Starling. With deliberate brain damage, she is held in a London hospital, until a suitable foster parent is found. With a dog as a friend, and her trusty foretelling scroll, Luna is lead to enrol into college to complete her mission.

Luna meets charming college teacher Professor Starling, an environmentalist, who wants London to evolve in an eco-friendly direction. Luna who has a duty of compassion for Earth harmonises with his ideas, and Starling finds himself falling madly in taboo love with his student.

Her scientific secret could make Starling’s dreams come true, and help Earth survive against climate change. But first, can Luna convince him she is really an Angel? Or will he hand her over to evil government men and let the doctor label her insane?

My Review

“How did these companies not realize, that archeologists had dug up powerful Egyptian tombs and found that possessions like gold and money did not go with them to the afterlife.”

P1070386In “The Girl From Our Moon“, the author give us storyline that can only be described as thought provoking. With amazing descriptions, characters and mystery, we are left wondering about the environment and about reality.

From the very beginning we are introduce to the main character Luna, and her excitement, love for Planet Earth, funny, colourful and determined personality. It’s in her point of view that we go on this quest. We see from her eyes the world and I personally could help, but connecting with her. I wanted to be her friends.

P1070391As we keep reading the book we met Professor Starling, what a fascinating man… and I loved his relationship with Luna, although she had some awkward moments because her human body and social interactions were a new thing to her. Nevertheless, who would want to have a professor as passionate as Starling is for the environment and teaching…

Of course, there are still a lot of questions left unanswered, especially the ending of this novel, but this is just the first book in the series so more is to come. And I’m certain that, just like this book, the second book in the series will take us on an adventure, discovering more about the angelic beings and about life itself, as well as alternative ways that are more environmental conscious.

P1070390And talking about the angelic beings, I loved that fantasy/paranormal element of the novel. I love Rebecca Bishop’s take on the Archangels and the angelic world and adding this cosmic relation to it. Mars, Venus, Moon… The universe’s energy and rainbows… There are a lot of divine, fantasy and mythical elements in the storyline that I quite liked, because it was a different. It was a different take on the all good versus evil, and the maintaining of the balance in our planet and in the entire Universe.

Overall, I maintain my opinion that this is a thought provoking book, that has a pace that varies in rhythm, but that keeps a flow that mimics life. Things happen, people change our minds, we teach as much as we learn, we fall down and we get up, we fall in love, we lose someone, we change our minds, we have to figure out who we are, we have to surpass the obstacles and keep going, we pray, we ask for guidance, we go faster, we go slower, we live crazy adventures and we enjoy the little things in life.

In order to restore balance between Light and Dark, the Trinity of Light was summoned to vanquish the Dark Witch and end the Battle of the Dark Ages.

Seventeen-year-old Quinn Callaghan lives in the small, rustic town of Silver Mountain. Its location may be rural, but it is home to an ancient pine forest that surrounds a supernatural hotspot–a nexus of raw and powerful energy.

When a charismatic witch from Ireland, and a mysterious guy with a secret of his own are drawn to the area, Quinn finds out that she inherited her rare abilities from a revered ancestor. Could it be that she shares a bloodline with the Original Trinity? Nearly 300 years later, the Darkness is returning to Silver Mountain, and the Trinity must stop it.

Author Bio

My love for writing began at a very young age–way before I could even type on a keyboard. I was always writing short stories and poems with a fan club of one (my mom.) I never stopped writing, but I don’t think I believed in myself enough to actually pursue it as a career.

When I enrolled in college, I took as many creative writing classes as they offered, and ended up graduating with a degree in photography and minoring in English.

I enjoy art in all its forms, but writing has always been my first love. Even when I was pursuing other careers, writing was always my go-to comfort. I later became an animal obedience instructor and met a children’s author through my dog training. She helped me get my foot through the door, so to speak, and I haven’t turned back since.

During the day, I manage an FBO at my local hometown airport, and by night, I dive into my writing with my husband and my four-legged children by my side.

My Review

Paranormal is one of the genres I love to read and write, so when I saw this book and read the blurb I was very curious and had to join in the blog tour. Witchcraft and magic, werewolves, mystery, murder and romance, a lot of elements in this book that complemented well the plot and setting, especially with a great group of characters.

The story flows around Quinn, the female main character, a witch that is trying to deal with her powers, and that made her real and I could empathize with her, which was great. She’s a good student, she lost her mom, she has a best friend… I liked her a lot, she’s part of the supernatural community and she’s just a teenager too and that speaks to my inner woman and connects to the memories of the teenage Jess that loved Paranormal romance novels and would connected with everything related to magic. Then, of course a guy appears. That’s when things start to get really, really interesting.

As we keep reading the book we get pulled into this paranormal world and a battle between good and evil, and of course it has that aspect of “connecting with our heritage and who we are”. There are a lot of elements in this story that I loved and does are just two of them. Others were: the well written characters that felt real and dynamic, and of course their interaction with each other and their pasts; the storytelling and the flow of the novel, that had action and suspense moments, as well as the unfolding of new information.

I won’t say more or talk about the specifics of the plot because I seriously want you guys to enjoy the story and all it’s mysteries, plus it’s the first book in a series, it wouldn’t be much fun if I would tell you secrets of this novel that would spoil the magic. Let’s just say that it has action scene as much as mystery, suspense and romance ones.

Overall, loved it. I can’t wait to know what else this series is going to bring us and what more information us, readers, can uncover in this paranormal world.

It was the kind of book that would attract my attention no matter if it’s now or years from now because I have always had a soft spot for this kind of genre and plot. So I hope you guys can join this journey and follow Quinn as she discovers herself gains confidence in her magical abilities and joins a group of awesome people to accomplish a goal.

Strand of Faith” is the first of Choices and Consequences Series, written by Rachel J. Bonner.

I want to thank Rachel, at Rachel’s Random Resources, and Rachel for the eCopy of this book and for allowing me to join in the fun and by being a part of the blog tour with my honest review of the book.

Strands of Faith

A girl and a monk, both with extraordinary mental powers, have compelling reasons not to fall in love.  But those from whom they expect support are manipulating them both because their choices will have consequences for the rest of the world.

After a stormy youth, Brother Prospero has found comfort and fulfilment in the monastery.  That is, until he discovers something that forces him to reconsider his whole vocation.  To follow his heart, he’ll have to face his demons again, outside the security of the monastery.

My Review

This is the first book in a series so it’s the entry for this new world, and personally I think that the first book in a series is always the one that can have more information about the world that sometimes in can make it heavy, but in this book, there was a good balance with the action, romance and the introduction of the characters and world.

P1060999The author created and amazing world. Really… it was complex and intriguing, it touched many genres I love with the fantasy and paranormal touches, and the romance. It had an unique tone and storyline, with some twists that truly surprised me. Intriguing and exciting book.

Then there are the characters. They too were complex and well written. You can see that they have their own voices and you get to follow them and learn about their lives and past, but also see their development. Plus their interaction made reading the book even more fun, and I felt like I could relate to them.

Overall, it was very entertaining and I’m curious for the books to come. It was the kind of book that take us on a journey in a different world, with fantasy and powers, and in the end it leave us needing the next book because you want to learn more about that world and the characters.
