A Minha Review

My Review

It’s always funny to see main characters with the name Jess or Jessica, because that’s my name and nickname, and it makes me laugh for a moment. The most fun was the fact that it was a romance novel with humor in a holiday context.

That been said, this story follows Jess and Jamie, two people that come from different backgrounds. Just that created a good starting point for the characters, while they got to learn about one another, in all the crazy funny interactions between them.

In a resort setting, during the holiday… a snowing moment, a cozy time, an hilarious scene… page after page… It was enjoyable and sweet. And if you are the kind of person that loves Christmas-y romances since humor, you may want to check this book out.

Overall, it was the kind of book one would read in a late afternoon, cozening up in the sofa. A quick and light novel, that will make you laugh.

On an extra note, the cover was a mix of funny and cute for me and it definitely caught my attention right after the title.

About the Author

Laura Marchant was born in 1959 in the seaside resort of Lytham St Annes, Lancashire, England. Both her parents were born in the same town, so not exactly a family of intrepid travellers!

As a child Laura and her siblings were fortunate enough to own shares in the families pets. Unbeknown to Laura at the time, her love for the animals formed the blueprint for a large part of her life.

In 2011 she finally found her vocation, and in the comfort of her own home, set up a pet boarding business. For the next 7 years she shared her abode with a pack of dogs.

A lot of this time was spent watching over the animals and observing their behaviour, which in turn inspired her to write her first novel ‘Trials and Tribulations of a Pet Sitter’.

My Review

Animals have always been part of my childhood. We always had dogs, cats, chickens, pigs, ducks… And I used to help out with their car. So, let’s just say that I always loved animals and knowing facts about them.

When I saw this book I was interesting. I don’t know much about Pet Sitters and I was curious to learn. Let’s just say that it was quite an adventure. This book is the memoir of Laura Marchant’s experiences during her journey and it was very relatable because of how it was written.

Although I’m more of a cat person – I have to say that or Nala (my cat) won’t let me sleep at night – I had dogs while growing up. My mom had a month old puppy when I was born. His name was Rocky. I grow up with him, and later I got my own puppy, Like. They were my best friends when I was small child. Rocky was very protective and Like was just a sweetheart. They are both gone. But I like to think that they are happy and at peace in pet heaven. That been said, I could tell the love that the author has just from reading her story. And that’s one of the things that grabbed my attention.

It was a real story. Not only was it inspiring and funny, but it also revealed the obstacles. Because that’s life. There are always some difficulties along the way, and I respect the author for letting us in on all the ups and downs of her journey.

It really is a book about the tribulations of a Pet Sitter, but it’s also a book that gives us information about dogs that could help anyone that has a dog and those that would like to give a home to one.

Overall, I enjoyed it immensely and I may go back to it in the future. I do recommend the book.

My Review

I always love to get out of my comfort zone and read other genres and books that talk about topics I haven’t dived into. That been said, I haven’t read many LGBTQ novels, just because I haven’t jumped into it yet. The ones I have read, I enjoyed, this book included.

We follow Julia in a journey that I could definitely describe as a rollercoaster of emotions. As I keep reading the story I found myself relating to a lot things that were talked about in the book and the emotions portrayed. Plus, I felt like I was part of the group of friends, thanks the storytelling and how the author get us to connect with the characters.

There definitely some unexpected moments that got me think, and others that got me so happy because I was hoping it would happen. I was so focus on the story, on Julia’s life and journey that I didn’t realized I was finished until the epilogue came.

Although it did touch on certain topics that are hard ones, like violence, drugs and attempt suicide, there was a lot of light moments as well. Friendship, wedding preparations, love and lust… Or even: following your dreams, taking a chance, making tough decisions, dealing with break ups… Every single thing was real, it represented life. Because life isn’t jut drama or romance, it’s everything in between. And that’s something I truly loved in this novel.

I won’t give any spoilers, let me just say that it fell like a light read because of the humor it had, combined with all the messy moments, the fantastic and funny characters. When I say it felt like life, I wasn’t kidding, it truly did and I loved that realism. Victoria Holmes knows how to take us on an exciting adventure and now I wish I could read another book of her, especially if she writes about Lucy.

Overall, I quite enjoyed the story, it was certainly a good Saturday read for me, and a good break from other genres. So, if you like this types of books, about life, about a side of the LGBTQ community, written by someone that knows it… then you should check out the book.

picturesinthesky e-Book coverShe gave up on romance years ago. He’s going through the motions. Their lives change forever when he makes contact out of the blue.

With her daughter leaving the nest, Michelle Cameron would rather spend her time with good friends, a glass of fizzy and a box set, than with another idiot bloke chipping away at her self-esteem. But when childhood friend Daniel Helmsley gets back in touch, the years roll away on a tide of laughter and friendship, which soon gives way to another roller coaster of love, excitement and panic. Can Michelle let herself trust again? What if Dan is just another idiot bloke, disillusioned with the present and nostalgic for the past?

My Review

This is the first book I’m reading of Amanda Paull, and I quite like the humor in it and it was quite a fun book to enjoy in a Saturday afternoon when we just want to have fun reading and still think about life, the good the bad and the hilarious.

This was a story about love, family, hope, determination, happiness, heartbreak, and everything that comes with life and being with other people, with that comes of course happy and sad moments as well as some funny and awkward moments. All of that was possible in the story and not seem like an over the top representation because of the author’s writing style. Amanda Paull gave us a well done plot that had a good flow and amazing details.

But that’s not the only thing I enjoyed in this novel. I liked the way the characters were written. They were well developed but there was still the possibility for more growth. And we can see that in Michelle since she’s the main character we get to know her more with each chapter and new information, not only about the reasons for her actions but also about her past and what made her the person she is and everything that still impact her life. And the detailed way it was written made me very curious to know more.

Overall, it was a detailed, slow-paced book what grabbed my attention because of the reality feeling it had, the plot and all the connection it created.

“Oh Crumbs” Review

Hello Friends!

How are you doing this Friday? Any plans for the weekend?

I was out all day, since early in the morning, so it took me a while to get to post this review and I apologize for that. But now I have the WordPress app on my phone and hopefully I will get to use it more and have post ready and published.

This weekend will be fun again, I will have cake! My great-grandpa’s birthday is this Sunday, so we are having lunch at a restaurant and then… cake! And I’m planing to take some more pics and prepare other posts and reviews, so stay tune.

Today I bring you my review of “Oh Crumbs“, by Kathryn Freeman. And I want to thank Kathryn and Rachel, at Rachel’s Random Resources, and Netgalley, for the eCopy of this book and for letting me be a part of this blog tour.

Oh Crumbs

OC_FRONT-150dpiRGB copySometimes life just takes the biscuit …
Abby Spencer knows she can come across as an airhead – she talks too much and is a bit of a klutz – but there’s more to her than that. Though she sacrificed her career to help raise her sisters, a job interview at biscuit company Crumbs could finally be her chance to shine. That’s until she hurries in late wearing a shirt covered in rusk crumbs, courtesy of her baby nephew, and trips over her handbag.

Managing director Douglas Faulkner isn’t sure what to make of Abby Spencer with her Bambi eyes, tousled hair and ability to say more in the half-hour interview than he manages in a day. All he knows is she’s a breath of fresh air and could bring a new lease of life to the stale corporate world of Crumbs. To his life too, if he’d let her.

But Doug’s harbouring a secret. He’s not the man she thinks he is.

My Review

P1060121This is my first book of Kathryn Freeman and I’m not disappointed. First, if you read the blurb you may be curious about what secret Doug is hiding, and also what will happen to Abby, since in the blurb she’s described as “as an airhead – she talks too much and is a bit of a klutz – but there’s more to her than that“. And I was one of the ones that got curious by those two things.

Second, I always love when a book makes me connect with the characters and makes me have those fun moments when I laugh a lot and have to stop reading for a moment, of just a small chuckle that just lights up the mood. And Kathryn gave that touch of humor and interesting characters that make us connect to the story and stay concentrated in the book.

P1060023I really liked Abby. First of all, I could connect to her since she’s an older sister, and I know how much responsibility sometimes we (older sisters) may have because of our younger sibling. Even right now that I’m almost 24 and my brother will be 17, I still see my brother as my baby brother, and I feel responsible for him, and my mom trust me to help out at home and with my brother.

Besides that fact and similarity, I liked how Abby is honest and genuine, she made me laugh, and be excited to know more about her life or (specially) what she would say. I felt like I could be her friend in real life and that’s always something I think it’s always fun when it happens.

P1060031Then there is Doug, and he’s an intriguing character. Then he’s first described it got me very curious, I could imagine him and I thought that if he had the looks and a great personality this could go smooth, but I knew that would happen because it wouldn’t make it as fun to read. And his personality… honestly it made me laugh a couple of time, especially the interactions, because of different they could be for one another, and that just made things much more interesting.

p1050985.jpgAnd reading in his POV it was different and, even thought not as much as with Abby, I could connect with him too. Which means that the characters are believable and the storyline perfect and that goes in a good pace that makes it interactive.

From the title, to the cover, the blurb and finally the epic, sweet and yummy story… Kathryn gave us a book to enjoy and ask for more. One of those book that you know you will reread in the future and still love it after the 20th time reading it.

I totally recommend it to everyone that wants to warm up and enjoy a good afternoon, relax and with your beverage and snacks of choice.

My Review

P1050984I don’t know how many books I have read in the mystery/detective genre, but I have found out that each and every book are unique to the authors’ style, and that’s so refreshing. With this book I found yet another book in genre that is so different from all the others I have read, including the classics.

This is the first book in the series, so we get to met the main character Barnabas Tew, and he’s a private detective. The funny thing is, he’s struggling. As I keep reading the book and get to know more about Barnabas, I found the all situation and his thought quite hilarious. The humor that Columbkill added to her book gave the plot some softness and uniqueness that I enjoyed.

But that’s not the only unique thing about this book. When you read the blurb you see that there is this paranormal/fantasy kind of thing going on, since Anubis, the Egyptian God of the Dead, makes an appearance. When I read that, I didn’t know what to think, but once I read the book… It works!

The reason why I’m using the word ‘unique’ a lot is because I don’t know what else to say to describe the book. It was a different take on the usual private detective book, an unexpected story, with characters that leave a mark in the plot, with a storyline quite intriguing because, let’s be honest, when was the last time you read a mystery/detective book with an Egyptian God as the client?

P1060086And if that paranormal aspect of the book hasn’t convince you to read the book, can I just remind you that there is humor in the book?… Image Barnabas, an Englishmen, private detective with big dreams, but whose abilities are not that over the top, and Wilfred, Barnabas’ loyal assistant and an interesting character, with perfect manners. And then imagine them going to the Underworld to find the Scarab God, the one who is responsible for rolling the sun across the sky each day. Imagine that adventure!

Can you imagine the journey to uncover each mystery and in the end solving the case. Imagine how much troubles Barnabas would put himself (and Wilfred) in? Doesn’t that sound fun? It does (and it was) sound fun to me. I went on a journey too, but to me is was a journey of laughter and having fun with Barnabas actions and how Wilfred would react to what’s going on. I think I could see this book series turn into a TV show. I would certainly watch it.

Because I find Egyptian Mythology very curious, I was excited to know the authors take on that. I would love to know more about it, but the way the characters, the Gods, were portrait made the book even more fun to read.

I do recommend this book and I can’t wait to read the next adventure this duo will have, and what kind of problems will happen.
