“Forgive Me” Review

Hello Friends!

Today the review is of a book in a completely different genre from those I posted yesterday. This is a Horror Thriller and it was a bit outside of my comfort zone, which I like.

Forgive Me“, written by Kateri Stanley, is a Horror and Thriller novel, published on 20th April 2021, by Darkstroke Books.

I want to thank Rachel, at Rachel’s Random Resources, and Kateri Stanley for the eCopy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Synopsis

Forgive Me Cover

A secret video tape. A painful truth. A quest for revenge.

Investigative journalist, Susan ‘Stripe’ McLachlan, is constantly hounded by eager documentarians for interview requests about the Night Scrawler murders. One of the victims of the mysterious serial killer was a member of her own family, her father.

At the peak of her career, her services are sought by Isaac Payne who commissions her to write an article for his website. Usually, her projects delve into more uncomfortable, questionable topics, but there’s a deep, almost hauntingly familiar pull about her new client that intrigues her.

As she learns more about Isaac, Stripe digs up fresh secrets about the murders, arousing her suspicions. After an awkward confrontation, she wakes up in Isaac’s bed — with a chain around her ankle.

Isaac shows her harrowing footage on an old VHS tape. The contents hits close to home…closer than Stripe ever imagined. Now, she has to wrestle with her own moral compass and unpick the truth from the web of lies that turn into a crescendo where memories created from misery and suffering cannot be silenced.

Will Isaac ever lay the past to rest? And how will Stripe cope with the revelations that challenge everything she has ever known?

My Review

Thrillers are stories that I found myself quite enjoying, but this book took it to a new level. It had a good amount of horror and psychological elements to it, and something more too. It left me at the edge of my seat and wanting to read more despite my heart jumping a couple of times.

This book follows investigative journalist, Susan ‘Stripe’ McLachlan, as she goes on a journey to uncover the truth about a particular story and the haunted past connected to her. Let me just say that as someone that as been loving the all true crime podcasts, I would definitely follow Stripe’s investigations if she was a real person with a podcast. I felt curious about her and she did grab my attention, it wasn’t just the plot.

Speaking of plot…. I loved the twists and turns. I don’t even know what to say without accidentally giving spoilers, so I will let you know that I was not expecting certain things that happened.

Overall, I loved the characters and how everything was connected. I also liked the changes of timelines when it came to the storytelling. All the elements in this book made it unique and refreshing, as much as it made it unexpected… Just like it’s story and its characters.

Synopsis

The Lazarus Child Cover

To save his missing daughter a distraught slayer must venture deep into the heart of darkness

Legendary vampire hunter Anton Yoska is on the edge, tormented by the rumour that the precious child he once thought dead is still alive and lost in a world of monsters.

One creature alone knows for sure what happened to Gretchen, but Terek Modjeski won’t divulge his secret – revelling in the twisted power over his long-time foe.

Despairing and drinking heavily, Anton stumbles from near disaster to near disaster as he puts his team in jeopardy, testing their friendship and loyalty to snapping point.

Only one diabolical solution is possible – to confront Terek in his maximum security cell and force the bloodsucker to end his game of cat and mouse. But making the cunning infernal talk will mean employing brutal methods that go against every code Anton has ever lived by, forcing him to become as much of a demon as the leeches he hunts.

Face to face with the evil, taunting vampire, the desperate slayer takes a decision that will change his destiny forever – sending him hurtling into danger to confront a terrifying truth about his lost child that risks not only his sanity but the future of mankind.

My Review

I love vampire stories. It’s a particular subgenre and mythology that I’m fascinated about.

Jay Raven keep surprising me with the route this series is taking. Book after book I loved it even more. He took me on a journey through the darkness and left me want more.

I love the dynamic of the vampires in the book. I love the characters, I love the fact that we are following a vampire hunter, which really is unique in all Vampire Stories world. It’s another side of the same coin and get so pumped thinking about the whole concept of the series.

Anton is a character that keeps developing and reading about his struggles and his interactions with society, and specially the vampires, is such an emotional rollercoaster. He has depth in his personality. I felt connected with him and I could understand him and his reasoning, thanks to the author’s craftsmanship.

Loved the flow of the story and the different points of view. And it was a page turner. Couldn’t put it down and read most of it at night. Which was quite interesting for my dreams afterwards.

Overall, and since I don’t want to spoil anything, let me just say that when I read Jay Raven’s vampire – vampire hunter story I get this new boost of energy and love of the subgenre.

My Review

When I read the synopsis I was intrigued. Never have I read a book with this kind of concept and I was curious to see what the real truth the story really was. The sentence “Someone has been getting away with murder for over 100 years” already calls for certain questions. Who is being? That is happening in that town? How could this happen?

As we are taken on a journey of well crafted psychological thriller, we enter a new reality. We jump from one point to another, learning about every character involved in these crazy plot. We are put to the test, really. We are sucked into the story and the narrative, we are creating connections and trying to answer questions at the same rhythm we are asking them.

Do they seem unrelated? Yes. Do everything sound strange? Yes. But was it mind blowing? Absolutely! It was the kind of book I didn’t know I needed to read until I started it. And I may reread it again to see if I can find anymore clues and details that may have escape my first read. That’s how I know I enjoyed the book and was blown away by the story… when I immediately make plans to reread it.

It’s a strong book, that talks about various aspects of humans, society and right & wrong. It left me wondering. It left me thinking. It left me understanding the characters in a powerful way, and emotional connection.

Overall, I loved it. It was unique, it had horror, mystery, thrilling moments and it played with my mind at each turn of the page. Definitely the kind of book to catch our attention and letting up desperate to learn more.

Vampire hunter Anton Yoska doesn’t believe in its existence or the whispered rumours of its creation by Leonardo Da Vinci 250 years before.

In a desperate race to beat nosferatu forces intent on destroying the wonder weapon, and cold-blooded gangsters who desire the Alchemist’s most prized invention for their own aggrandisement and riches, Anton is caught in a maelstrom of double dealing and lies..

Traps loom at every turn, and nothing is what it appears, but acquiring the Basium Lucis is the least of the his problems  – for the ferocious Modjeski vampire family want retribution for his slaughter of their clan chief a year before. My Review

First of all, I would like to say that I have read the first book and loved it, so when I saw the opportunity to read and review this book, I was very excited. I love vampire stories, I’m currently working on one, if that’s any clue of my love for this topic.

P1070737It always amazes me the amount of versions that exist around the story of vampires, from the POV of the vampires itself, or the one that hunt them, it all brings diversity and a new take on the legend.

With book one, Crimson Siege, I loved how Jay Raven took the them and made it his own, and with this novel, he continues to go deeper into the world he created, taking us with him. And we, once again, follow Anton Yoska, a vampire hunter.

I will try to now say much since I don’t want to give any spoilers, plus I recommend you all to read book one and them book two, so you can fully understand the main character and his background story.

I loved the new element added to this world, with the Daylight’s Kiss, and Leonard Da Vinci’s formula. That just made the story richer in my opinion. And since Anton is the one procuring it, it got me so curious about that would happen next. Because, let’s be honest, it’s a century old battle between vampires and the Vatican, both parts want to have it. One to destroy it, the other to use it. Anything can happen and I loved that.

Overall, I loved that this book was as awesome as the first one. It had it’s fair amount of excitement, action, horror, vampires, and a war that come with lies and uncertainty. Like I said previously, I do recommend you to read the previous novel, that why you can understand the character’s background and why certain things happen.

My Review

P1070398Immediately after finishing book one in this series, I was still at awe with all of Katey’s amazing-ness and spell bonding writing style, and once I finally was able to put myself back together, because I truly was surprised about that first book… I got into the second book.

Steam Fog” is about Michael, the other Roger brother. And it’s also about Rose and Xavier on their romantic kayaking date. Of course, I was excited about getting to know Michael’s side of the story and what happened to him, and I was intrigued about Rose and Xavier too.

In a fast pace, this storyline follows the characters closely, in a thrilling flow of events that made me question the nature of the reality depicted in this book. I wonder if things would take a turn to the worse, yet again surprising me just like the Liam’s story did. I should have known that Katey Morgan’s storytelling ability would take me on a journey that would leave me at the edge of my seat until the very end.

P1070275We get some answers about Michael’s life, and I liked that it intertwined both stories, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t felt sad. I did. I was sad for Michael and Liam. Especially because I as still a tiny bit overwhelmed with emotions and thoughts provoked by Liam’s story.

Overall, the author truly is an awesome Thriller/Horror author, although it was a short story, I doesn’t stop being exciting and scary and suspense-y… Actually, the fact that it was a short story makes the plot even more intense and grabbed my attention with more power. I can’t wait to read more of Katey Morgan’s books.

My Review

P1070397This is the first book I ever read of Katey Morgan, and I loved it! This was one of those quick stories that leave you at the edge of your seat from beginning to end. I know it was a mystery and horror short story, but I wasn’t expecting the turn the plot would take once I started it.

From the descriptions, to the characters and the unexpected plot, I loved every single element that made this book unique. The author is quite a brilliant writer with many trick up her sleeves, and I know this series isn’t the full extent of her abilities. So I’m mind-blown.

P1070274When we first read about Liam and Michael, all from Liam’s POV, we connect with them, we wonder about when Liam is going to reconnect with his brother. Then things start to happen and chills start to form… That’s when the connection and empathy we have with Liam takes a new meaning.

I’m not going to reveal much in this review, but let’s just say that I was all over the place in terms of emotions, all in a good way because it means that the story took me on an amazing and exciting rollercoaster.

Katey Morgan truly is a genius. She’s the kind of storyteller that will leaves us at awe. And this book shows everyone her talent in a spooky, mysterious, awesome way.

Cover Reveal: Crossroads in the Dark IV: Ghosts

Hello Friends!

How are you guys doing this lovely Saturday? Any good books you are reading?

I’m still sick, so I’m stuck at home, in bed most of the time, so I have been doing a lot of writing and I’m thinking about sharing with you guys the prologue. Besides that, I have been reading too.

And speaking about books… Today I have the privilege to help out with the cover reveal of Crossroads in the Dark IV: Ghosts, and Anthology in the Horror, Thriller and Suspense genres, that will be release on 1st December 2018, published by Burning Willow Press.

Here is the cover, blurb and some information about the authors.

Blurb

critdIV-frontcoverOne night after a close friends’ funeral, you feel a strange tickle on your neck. At first you shrug it off as a figment of your imagination, or a flying pest, but then you feel it again… and again… and again. Turning you do not see anything there. Nothing, not even a shadow. In the far-reaches of your sight, you start to make out a somehow familiar figure, arising from the darkness of the corner of your room. You reach for the switch of the nightstand lamp only to knock it over to the floor. Your fear starts to rise along with the hairs on your neck. A familiar voice comes across the room… “Why didn’t you hear me…?”

Welcome back to the Crossroads.

Crossroads in the Dark IV: GHOSTS is a collection of short stories developed in hopes of bringing awareness to suicide prevention around the world. While the stories do not tell of suicide, they do tell of GHOSTS. For whom are the ghosts that haunt us daily? What are the remains of an otherwise perfect life ended far too soon? Which are the people who we find hardest to move forward from when we lose them? The easy answer is the ones we failed to save.

My Review

Children

Jozi Flash” is a collection of stories in different genres, which means, there is a great story for anyone’s tastes.

From Children’s fiction, Romance, Horror, Comedy, Tragedy, Fantasy, Crime to Science-Fiction… You get to laugh, fall in love, cry, scream and go on an adventure with the characters.

As most of you may know, I love short stories, which meant I dived in this book with excitement and curiosity. And since there were different genres, if I wasn’t in the mood at that moment and go back whenever I wanted to read or reread the stories.

I can’t honestly choose which story I liked more, because each story is special and as a particular writing style that is unique to the author that wrote it, and I feel like it wouldn’t be fair.

FantasyI know I said I would say which story I loved more, but I can say that one of my favorites was “A Stroll Through the Light” it was a quick and touchy story, and there was this quote I loved: “It became their ritual and each day her dress flashed in the light of the sun. The sky was painted in shades of red and purple and blue.

Every story had a quick feeling, like eating a good snack, and good pace in the storyline, and I loved that. It made the reading of the short stories fun, even the tragic ones were not only emotional, but let me enjoy the storytelling to the fullest.

Science-FictionAnother thing I loved about this books were the illustrations and the titles of the short stories. Every single title made me curious about what it would talk about and the illustrations at the beginning of each genre was funny and intriguing. One of the drawings I loved the most was the Science-Fiction one. There was something about it that made me dream, and I loved that.

Over all, while reading this anthology, you get fly through the sky like you were a dragon, dream again with each fairytale like story, cry with all the emotional stories, laugh at how funny they were and just enjoy each journey.

I do recommend this anthology, because they are short stories and you get different genres that you get to enjoy, so it’s a book or everyone.

Beneath the Wax by Nthato Morakabi

1723: Constantine Bourgeois is a man of many secrets. Artisan by day, killer by night, he turns his victims into wax figures for his shop.

2045: Richard Baines works for the renowned Anthony Garfield Historical Museum. His mundane existence is a stark counterpoint to his fascination with serial killers and science fiction.

Constantine’s nightmares drive him to undertake a journey to uncover a long-forgotten secret. Richard’s research uncovers a company secret and the mystery of Madame Bourgeois.

Two men, two timelines, and truths that will only be revealed when they look Beneath the Wax

Dim Mirrors by Carin Marais

Dim Mirrors is a collection of 39 flash fiction stories that open windows into worlds of fantasy and nightmare. Interwoven with images from mythology and folklore are the themes of love, loss, and memory. The comical “Not According to Plan” leads to more serious and introspective works like “Blue Ribbons” and “The Destroyer of Worlds”, while mythology and folkloric elements come together in stories like “The Souls of Trees” and “Ariadne’s Freedom”.

Sketches by Nicolette Stephens

Like art sketches, flash fiction stories are fleeting moments captured in a few hundred words.

In a world without men, the first boy child is welcomed as the saviour of his race; a cuckoo clock holds death and destruction in its beautifully carved figures; and a snowman holds a silent vigil of peace during war.

In this collection of 50 stories, illustrated with her artwork, the author delves into worlds of imagination and reality inspired by words and drawings.

“Doctor Perry” Review

Hello Friends!

P1060011I hope you are having a good Friday. Do you have plans for this weekend? I plan on doing some writing and reading more. And… Eating some cake, since it was my grandaunt’s birthday last Thursday and we are celebrating it Sunday.

Now, let me stop talking about cake before I get really hungry. Let me talk about the reason why I’m writing this post.

I joined the blog tour that Rachel, from Rachel’s Random Resources, hosted for Kirsten McKenzie‘s book “Doctor Perry“.

So thank you Rachel and Kirsten McKenzie for sending me an eCopy of this book and giving me a chance to read it and give my honest opinion about it. Free of spoilers like usual.

My ReviewP1060012

This is the first book I read of Kristen McKenzie and I enjoyed it. It’s a Horror/Thriller novel about a doctor and his patients, and everyone and everything in between. It’s about trust and lies. About death and unexpected twists. With descriptions that gave me a vivid image, not only visual, but also sometimes even smells, that made the book slow down a bit which made the suspense linger.

Like I said, I liked the descriptions, and I also liked how different this book is. I haven’t read that many horror books, but the concept and the plot made it so much enjoyable. Well, it’s not a happy book, it’s a horror book and Dr. Perry is a scary man, but you know what I mean. The fact that the storyline and how things unfold kept me glued to my phone is fantastic. It means I’m enjoying the book and that I can’t put it down.

P1060038When we first start reading we met some characters, some important characters, and, for me, although I was curious to read the book, Kristen’s way with words made me step back a bit. It started to build up the tension and uncomfortable atmosphere that clearly said “There’s something wrong here.” Of course, from the blurb we already knew there was something wrong, but still the tension kept on building up.

I have said that Dr. Perry is scary, and I don’t want to spoil anything, but there was a weird feeling about him from the very first moment, even if you didn’t read the blurb you would feel it. It was layer after layer of craziness, mystery, scary truth and a touch of weirdness, lot of creeping feelings. And even though you know it’s fiction, you get at the edge of your seat, and can’t stop reading.

P1060035I found myself curious about all the characters and curious about the truths, and when I thought I had learned everything, another twist appeared or something happened that shocked me. That kept this interesting.

I do recommend this book. If you like horror you should check it out. I haven’t read a lot of horror/thriller novels (comparing to how many fantasy or PR books I have read), but I honestly quite enjoy the book and because I don’t want to spoil anything, just go read it and see for yourself and get your own opinion on this book. And seriously, just enjoy the thriller until the very end.
