Author Bio

Julian Barr first fell in love with all things ancient and magical in childhood, when he staged his own version of I, Claudius using sock puppets. After his PhD in Classics, he did a brief stint as a schoolteacher, hated being called ‘sir,’ and dived into storytelling. Although he remains open to the possibilities of sock puppet theatre, historical fantasy is his passion. He has published scholarly research on Roman medicine and the gastronomic habits of Centaurs, but prefers to think of himself as an itinerant bard. He is also the author of the Ashes of Olympus trilogy.

My Review

This is the first story I’m reading written by Julian Barr and I do love that he compiled the novellas all in one book because I just kept reading one after the other with no worries, just has I would read a big book.

Now, we are taken to a world with a set of rules and we follow Dóta in her journey to discover herself and her human side. That’s something we can relate at one point in our lives, we end up trying to figure out who we are as people, our likes and dislikes, our goals, our place in the world. And I kind of could relate to Dóta in that aspect, although her journey is different.

As we read the book we get to learn about the world and the characters, it’s a place of myths and magic, with adventure and everything that entails, from action scenes to drama. Each page, each moment, brought some new information as well as questions, and it grabbed my attention to learn more.

The characters were interesting and the interaction were realistic in some ways, with the old world vibe. Dóta was such an intriguing character from the very beginning and she goes on her adventure through the new world, we go right along side her.

Life is full of ups and downs, full of moments of obstacles, of uncovering secrets, of fighting for our goals, and in a way, this story had that, which made me enjoy the story and be excited to read the next page just to see if I was right, if I was going to learn more, what the characters would do… basically what was going to happen in the next scene.

Overall, I enjoyed reading this book with the three novellas in it. It was engaging and it left me wondering about humankind and our nature, as well as what this world had to offer, at each page I read. I do hope the author goes back to the world and take us back to it to follow other character, because it was an interesting take in the Nordic mythology and magic in a fantasy novel.

My Review

P1060075As a Historical Romance lover, I haven’t read many books that are set in the era this book is set, the Edwardian era. Maybe this is the first book I read, it is the first book of Rachel Brimble that I have read and it was such a refreshing book for me in the Historical fiction genre.

During a time when the world was moving forward and women were finding their voices and fighting for their right… Elizabeth Pennington want to take the family business into that new era, into the future, but to do that she has to convince her father, Edward, that even though she is a woman, that doesn’t mean she isn’t capable to do the job of running the business.

P1060069That aspect of the story was so empowering. I loved that her passion, her believes and her determination is so strong in the book, because it makes her one of those characters that is highly needed in the literature world. For me, it’s never to much to have many strong, opinionated and empowering women characters. I admire women like that and reading about it in this setting and era it’s amazing.

We have the strong and fiery Elizabeth and then were is Joseph Carter, the glove maker. He and Elizabeth have similar goals in therms of taking their family business. He’s a hard-working and proud about his family and roots and he’s smart and charismatic which was awesome to read about, especially the moments between Elizabeth and Joseph. If those fun moments between them don’t makes you love both characters, then Joseph’s past will break your heart and you will feel a connection with him too.

P1060070I really did enjoy this book. I loved how the descriptions gave life to the story, the plot was fantastic and it make us root for Elizabeth’s and Joseph’s success, and the flow of the storyline made everything have a good balance and grab our attention. And not only do you want them to win and accomplish their goals, you want their happiness and for them to be together in the end.

I was quite impress with how the book made me feel. I was surprised by the descriptions and the fact that the book really did transport me to this place in time and space. Although when I started getting to know the characters more, I felt the connection and I wanted to be a part of their lives, to be a friend of them, to help them out in their quest.

As a young woman, Elizabeth is an inspiration, and it means a lot to see a character like this in a book. And I recommend the book to everyone, even if you don’t particularly enjoy historical fiction, you should read the book and enjoy a book full of characteristics that make it important: inspiration, empowerment, determination, fighting for our goal, love and family.

My review

P1060083I got really sad when I finished reading the Wild Warriner Series, because I know there were some characters there that I was curious about, including Clarissa. But when I found out about this book I was relieved. So you can understand how excited I got when I first started reading the book.

Sebastian Leatham is such an amazing character. I didn’t know if I would loved him as much as I loved the Warriner brothers, but I did! And I loved seeing how he reacted to Clarissa, how they interacted with each other. It was amazing. And the fact that he is a spy and was nearly killed, and now he’s trying to get back to living and getting better…

P1060068Well, Virginia does know how to make a story intriguing and a character different from all the others in her books. Each character that she writes about has that unique quality that makes me want to get to know them better with each page.

Then we have Clarissa… if you read “A Warriner To Tempt Her” you know who she is… When I first read about her I didn’t know what to think. She wasn’t the kind of character that immediately grab my love, but I knew there was a story there. Besides, I wasn’t focus on her when she appeared in that book. When I found out that Virginia was going to publish this book and it was about her and an male character/love interest, I got thinking and I realized that it was the right time to find out more about that story, about that feeling I had when I first read about her.

P1060120And that was what made me a bit open to her. I knew that she deserved to get her story told, even if she wasn’t very likable in the beginning and she has a lot of potential for developing and to grow as a person. So I was happy to finally see that developing, and to see her for whom she really is. So I was definitely not disappointed about this book.

I loved Clarissa and Sebastian’s relationship and that same relationship unfolded, because from page after page, we get that feel of love, action, drama, unexpected moments and humor that Virginia works so well in her storytelling. And it’s great to see how the characters can change, because it gives me a sense of realism in the world that Virginia Heath created, from book one of the Wild Warriners to this one.

P1060054And speaking about the Warriners and before I forget… I love to see the Warriners in this book. As soon as Dr. Joe appeared I almost screamed. It’s like seeing and old friend again, after so many time away from each other. And I know I have read his book this year, a couple of months ago, but still, it was amazing to read a bit about them again.

Overall, I can’t wait for the other books in this new series. the concept is amazing and I can’t wait to see what else Virginia is going to come up with and how exhilarating the next story will be. We are talking about Virginia Health after all, so I know she will write brilliant, funny, romantic, action and drama moments that will blow our minds and fill our hearts with the need of reading another book.P1060106

Do I recommend this book? I recommend all of her books, this one included. If you like Historical Romances and books with love, humor and action, plus a spy and a lady, go for it and go grab a copy of this book. Go buy it and enjoy a cup of tea (or wine) and the book.

My Review

P1060089This is the first book I’m reading of Victoria’s and even though I’m starting the series by reading the 3rd book, it was okay. I could understand the book without problems. Actually, I now really want to read the other books too and get involved in the series and understand the books as a group.

The blurb and the cover were the things that captivated me and got me excited to read the story, and I was not disappointed. There is this thing about historical romances that I still don’t understand why it makes me excited to read, but I do and I can’t stay away. That’s what happened with this book.

P1060016With brilliant descriptions and a tone in the storytelling that takes you to another place in another time, I can honestly say “Well done! because that’s always that I love in a historical romance. When a writer, just like the amazing Victoria Cornwall, have the ability to transport us in another time and take us on a journey, especially in the historical fiction genre, then I know the book gets a 5 star in my list.

P1060088I read because I enjoy it, I have fun and I sometimes want to escape the problems of day-to-day life. Victoria’s book did that to me. Besides the amazing storytelling, the characters made everything much more special. We get to experience the plot through them, they are real and the journey they take was so vivid, I felt like I was there with them. And in the end, I felt like I could relate to them even thought the time and place is something I never experienced in real life and the struggles of the era have a different tone.

Beth was an amazing character. As we got to meet her and started to understand more and more her personality and learn about her life, the more I loved her. I felt like I was friends with her because how personal the story felt.

P1050972This book had mystery too and that just made the storyline much more intriguing. Seeing Beth go through that journey and figuring things out with the mysterious stranger… Oh well, it was fun! The consequences to their actions led to character developing and as the story kept going and things got more interesting with each page I wasn’t able to put down the book.

In the end I can only say: “Go read the damn book!” I recommend it to all Historical Romance’s fans. And to does that aren’t that big fans, just try it anyway.

Barnabas Tew and the Case of the Missing Scarab

35336473.jpgBarnabas Tew is a private detective struggling to survive in his trade in Victorian London. Fearing that he is not as clever as he had hoped to be, he is plagued by a lack of confidence brought on in no small part by his failure to prevent the untimely deaths of several of his clients.

Matters only get worse when Anubis, the Egyptian God of the Dead, is referred to Barnabas by a former client (who perished in a terribly unfortunate incident which was almost certainly not Barnabas’ fault). Anubis sends for Barnabas (in a most uncivilized manner) and tells him that the scarab beetle in charge of rolling the sun across the sky every day has been kidnapped, and perhaps dismembered entirely.

The Land of the Dead is in chaos, which will soon spill over into the Land of the Living if Barnabas – together with his trusty assistant, Wilfred – cannot set matters to right. Pulled from his predictable (if unremarkable) life in Marylebone, Barnabas must match his wits against the capricious and dangerous Egyptian gods in order to unravel the mystery of the missing beetle and thereby save the world.

Oh Crumbs

39850613.jpgSometimes life just takes the biscuit…

Abby Spencer knows she can come across as an airhead – she talks too much and is a bit of a klutz – but there’s more to her than that. Though she sacrificed her career to help raise her sisters, a job interview at biscuit company Crumbs could finally be her chance to shine. That’s until she hurries in late wearing a shirt covered in rusk crumbs, courtesy of her baby nephew, and trips over her handbag.

Managing director Douglas Faulkner isn’t sure what to make of Abby Spencer with her Bambi eyes, tousled hair and ability to say more in the half-hour interview than he manages in a day. All he knows is she’s a breath of fresh air and could bring a new lease of life to the stale corporate world of Crumbs. To his life too, if he’d let her.

But Doug’s harbouring a secret. He’s not the man she thinks he is.

The Invisible Case

170804_8bf44fa58bd54970b6c9b676103c4855~mv2_d_1600_2400_s_2.jpgIt’s Easter 1970 in the seaside town of Tamarisk Bay, and for one family in the seaside town of Tamarisk Bay the first Easter of a new decade brings a shocking tragedy. Amateur sleuth and professional librarian, Janie Juke, is settling into motherhood and some quality time with her family. When her Aunt Jessica is due back from Rome after nine years travelling around Europe, she arrives back in town with a new Italian friend, Luigi, and the whole family soon get embroiled in a tangle of mystery and suspicion, with death and passion at the heart of the story.

As time runs out on Luigi as prime suspect for murder, Janie has to use all of her powers of deduction in the footsteps of her hero, Hercule Poirot, to uncover the facts. Why did Luigi come to Tamarisk Bay? What is the truth about his family?

As Luigi’s story unfolds, tragedy seems to haunt the past, present and unless Janie acts fast, possibly what is yet to come.

Sincerely, Me

1169072251.jpgSincerely, Me is a collection of poetry that is derived from the mind of an anxiety filled young woman who wants nothing more than to express herself in a creative way. This book is a journey through the mind as you will encounter hardships, mistakes, love and broken hearts as you read through the pages of Sincerely, Me.

This is the second book in a three part series of poetry and yet again, another story to be told. Though these pages, I hope you become empowered, loved and feel more than just a walking statue, just waiting to break free from your already crumbling structure. Build yourself up and never believe you’re anything less than the beautiful swan.

Three college juniors. A swim team. A manipulative coach. Unexpected life circumstances. A girl struggling with her sexuality. A story that you will not forget.

Angels Can’t Swim is a novella that captures so many elements of the life of a student-athlete, from mental health to sexuality to relationships. While partially a story about swimming, it is also the story of finding yourself, finding your voice, and figuring out who you want to be. Focusing on college students and those around them but dealing with issues that cross the lifespan, readers from young adult all the way up will all enjoy this book and find something in one of the characters that sounds a little bit like them.

“The Red Hand Of Fury” Review

Hello Friends!

Once I decided to start reading this book I realized it was 4th in the Silas Quinn Series, although it can be read as a standalone, it means I will have to go buy all the others because I enjoyed this book a lot.

P1050925.JPG“But what is the book, Jess?” You may ask. Well, it’s called “The Red Hand of Fury” by R. N. Morris and I will tell you a bit more about him and his book.

First, I want to thank Rachel at Rachel’s Random Resources for this blog tour, to R. N. Morris for the amazing book and for getting me curious about the all series, and to NetGalley for the eCoppy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The Red Hand of Fury

Author’s Bio:

rm shot 2R. N. Morris is the author of eight historical crime novels. His first, A Gentle Axe, was published by Faber and Faber in 2007. Set in St Petersburg in the nineteenth century, it features Porfiry Petrovich, the investigating magistrate from Dostoevsky’s great novel, Crime and Punishment. The book was published in many countries, including Russia. He followed that up with A Vengeful Longing, which was shortlisted for the CWA Gold Dagger. A Razor Wrapped in Silk came next, followed by The Cleansing Flames, which was nominated for the Ellis Peters Historical Novel Dagger. The Silas Quinn series of novels, set in London in 1914, began with Summon Up The Blood, followed by The Mannequin HouseThe Dark Palace and now The Red Hand of Fury, published on 31 March, 2018.

Taking Comfort is a standalone contemporary novel, written as Roger Morris. He also wrote the libretto to the opera When The Flame Dies, composed by Ed Hughes.

The Red Hand of Fury - CoverLondon, June 1914. A young man is mauled to death at London Zoo after deliberately climbing into the bear pit. Shortly afterwards, another young man leaps to his death from the notorious Suicide Bridge. Two seemingly unconnected deaths – and yet there are similarities.

Following a third attempted suicide, Detective Inspector Silas Quinn knows he must uncover the link between the three men if he is to discover what caused them to take their own lives. The one tangible piece of evidence is a card found in each of the victims’ possession, depicting a crudely-drawn red hand. What does it signify? To find the answers, Quinn must revisit his own dark past. But can he keep his sanity in the process…

My Review:

This is the first book I read in the Silas Quinn series. Before I started reading I knew it was the 4th book in the series, but I decided to just go for it and read the other three after. And I discover that it’s okay to read it as a standalone, because you still get all the goosebumps and all the tension, and you are even more curious about Silas, the Deputy Inspector that is the head of the Special Crimes Department at the Scotland Yard.

P1050926.JPGWhen you begin the book you get immediately pushed in to the world of the Colney Hatch Lunatic Asylum and because one of my favorite books and movies is “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest” you may understand why I got intrigued even more. And if in the other book and movie the doctors and staff were scarier than the patients, in “The Red Hand of Fury” you can be sure it’s the same.

As we keep reading we understand more what’s going on and even more questions start to form in our minds. This mystery/crime book involves Silas and his companions trying to figure out what caused the death of a series of men. Meanwhile he must confront his own past and we get this weird feeling sometimes, but still we keep reading.

That’s what happened to me. I wasn’t entirely sure of what was true or not. Was he really crazy or was he just pretending? Nevertheless, with the mystery behind those weird deaths, I was so stuck in the book I couldn’t let it go even when I was ready to jump from my seat.

P1050928.JPGSilas Quinn fascinated me. He’s a complex and intelligent man, haunted by his past, just like we all are I suppose, but there is this ‘something else’ I can’t quite put my finger on that makes him different from all the other detective characters in books, movies and tv series.

R. N. Morris did such an wonderful job creating amazing (good and bad, or just crazy) characters and setting the atmosphere and flow of the book in such a way that made it possible for me to fell into the book and feel like I was part of that story.

I totally recommend this book and I will be reading the previous ones in the near future.

Hello Friends!

Today I’m here with a review of an amazing and emotional Historical Fiction book, “Arlette’s Story“, by Angela Barton, as part of Rachel’s Rachel’s Random Resources blog tour.

When Arlette Blaise sees a German plane fly over the family farm in 1940, she’s comforted by the fact that the occupying forces are far away in the north of the country. Surely the war will not reach her family in the idyllic French countryside near to the small town of Oradour-sur-Glane?
But then Saul Epstein, a young Jewish man driven from his home by the Nazis, arrives at the farm and Arlette begins to realise that her peaceful existence might be gone for good …

My Review:

With a stunning cover, “Arlette’s Story” is an amazing and heartbreaking novel set in France during World War II. It’s about Arlette, her family and friends and how their lives changed by the events caused by the war and German occupation of France. It’s about how they pulled together and tried to survive despite everything they witnessed and were subjected to.

P1050913I don’t think I have ever read that many stories set during WWII, but I have read a lot of articles and seen documentaries, plus my brother has always had a fascination with that time period so we sometimes talk about it.

[Reading this story played with my feelings a bit. Especially because my grandparents were immigrants in France and dad and some of his sisters and brother were born there, and I still have family there, which means I feel a connection with France. So, reading this book made me think about that, about every family living in fear and just trying to survive. Portugal managed to remain neutral throughout the war despite extraordinary pressures from both sides, so I can’t fulling understand the struggles, but we were ruled by a dictatorship, and about that I know a lot of stories of trying to survive, stay out of prison and having no freedom of speech. Plus a lot of people were able to escape to Portugal during WWII.]

That’s why this book was kind of heartbreaking and amazing uplifting to me. It made me thing about all the History classes I had about WWII and about Portuguese history at that time. Even though it’s a historical fiction novel, I know that this story could be real, because terrible things have happened during that time.

P1050914This story is about Arlette Blaise, her family, friends and neighbors. It’s about everything change from the moment Nazis arrive to the small-town Arlette, family and friends lived in, and how the peace they felt they had, just disappears.

Another reason why I was touched by this story and I it made me remember all the stories I had listen to and think about World’s History, and Portugal’s too, is because Angela Barton knows how to capture the emotion not only in the way the characters act but in the descriptions. The hardship, the lack of food, the fear, the struggles to survive and the secrets… The constant threat of exposure made me stay at the edge of my seat, read to jump or to just scream.

My heart was going crazy sometimes and I almost couldn’t put the book down and go to sleep, and when I finally could open my eyes enough I decided to just sleep, and in the morning, I woke up ready to go back to reading.

Not only was the suspense and the emotions one of the things I loved, but also the moments of love, friendship, family strength and faith, those were some of the uplifting moments that made me love the story even more.

I totally recommend this book to everyone that likes to read historical fiction and have an interest in the WWII period.
