“Lure of Obsession” Review

Hello Friends!

I hope everything is going well. I must say that I’m still a bit crazy and confused with beginning the vacation. I’m so confused that I completely forgot to add a review post to my calendar and I then forgot that I had to post this review yesterday.

I am terribly sorry for that because I hate when I’m not able to post when I’m supposed to and when I promise. It’s not me.

Nevertheless, I read this book while working this July, and absolutely loved it. So I’m very excited to finally get this post for you.

Lure Of Obsession“, written by Lisa Kessler, is the first paranormal romance novel in The Muse Chronicles, published on 1st August 2016.

I want to thank Rachel, at Rachel’s Random Resources, and Lisa Kessler for the eCopy of this book and for allowing me to join in the fun and being a part of the blog tour with my honest review of the book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

My Review

As you all by know by now, I love paranormal romances and although this one is the first book by Lisa Kessler that I read, I really need to read more of her books in the future because I loved this one.

This is the first book in a series that can be read as a standalone. It was an amazing start of a series and after reading it, I’m very curious to know more about this series and what next will happen in this world.

This novel follows Melanie and Nate in this romance that takes us right alongside the characters through a mystery and paranormal connection. It was a journey that was different, with a concept and world building that made me very curious. And although I don’t want to give any spoilers about the plot, I can talk about the characters.

Mel and Nate were amazing characters. I can’t help my love for detectives no matter the kind of genre the novel is, and Nate was dreamy and just an amazing character. Then there is Mel, that made me laugh because my goddaughter’s name is Melanie, despite that, Mel has this personality that I could get and her past and actions were interesting and I connected with her in some ways. I loved all the moments of interaction between them, because the romance wasn’t unbelievable, and the characters had dreams, plans, flaws, demons, qualities and determination and when they were together that is visible too.

Overall, I loved it. It had action, mystery, romance, paranormal qualities, Greek mythology, a plot that was difference from what I read in the past, with characters that were developed and kept growing and felt true and real. The fact that this is the first in a series means that there is much more to uncover yet, and that makes me even happier.

Lisa Kessler brought a breath of fresh air to the paranormal romance genre, or at least to my month because I needed something exciting in the genre that I love so much. So my July was perfect, not only because of all the books I have read, but especially because of this book that made my lunch breaks fantastically entertaining.

Like I said before I will be reading more of Lisa Kessler, especially because I had her books on my TBR already and after reading this book I’m even more excited and in love with the all idea and  with her books. So I highly recommend then.

My Review

P1070057I knew this was a series, and after I read the first book I was extremely curious about Dr. Alex’s new adventure. This series is probably one of my favorite mystery thriller series this year, and I will let you know why in a second. But first, since this is the second novel in this series, I highly recommend people to read The Cuckoo Wood before this one because, although it can be read as a stand alone, I truly believe you will get a better understanding about the main character if you read the book in sequence.

Now, let me do a list of things I loved about this book.

One… the author’s writing style was just perfect. The was the plot, the pace, the intriguing mystery and characters were brilliantly written and made the entire novel fascinating and I couldn’t leave it alone until I learned all it’s secrets. Plus it was made me invest in the story and try to figure out the truth behind this new case.

P1070133Two… with this book we learn more about Alex and we see how she’s dealing after that first case, and as we read this book we have a chance to understand her even more and see the development she had. I already saw her as a determined woman that wants to find out the truth. I loved reading that about her, it made me connect with her more, and I felt like I was there with Alex trying to understand the truth, which was want really made me excited.

Three… the interactions between the characters was intriguing. Alex has to deal with a lot of obstacles while interacting with the community and finding out what people knew. And the interactions made the book seem even more real and human.

Four… the themes used in both books are creative and unique and that’s another aspect I loved about this novel (and series). The idea of a faith healer is quite fascinating to me and I liked how the author took that idea into this novel and created an ‘at the edge of my seat’ kind of book.

Overall, loved the book and I recommend it to everyone. I can’t wait to read more books from M. Sean Coleman and following Alex in another journey to find the truth.

My Review

P1060034Hunter’s Chase” is the first book in the series and it was a fantastic start of a series. Val gets you intrigued in not only the mystery/crime that got you to start the book, but the new group of character – primarily the main character, Hunter Wilson – that get you on this mystery adventure.

Yesterday I was talking to my friend, a crime/mystery lover, about books, and he agreed that in a good mystery book, the plot is not the only important thing. A character that engages and let us feel like we are part of the story because of how we get suck in, is also important. Most of the time even if the mystery is epic and the crime mind blowing, if the characters don’t hold down the house and develop as the book goes, the storyline can die and feel boring. But… If the characters surprise us, makes us laugh, make us hate or love them, make us excited to learn new things and facts… then the storyline gets a great pace and the mystery journey keeps unfolding.

P1060097Val gets that in her book. She makes me get curious about the mystery and curious to learn more about DI Hunter Wilson. As the book continues, from the first page to the last, I was kind happy in a way. Happy because with each book I reads in this genre I get surprise by the author’s take on the all crime and mystery idea and gave the book their own personal twist.

Things keep happening, some are unexpected, others are just amazingly described, and I kept wondering about what would happen next. The thriller aspect of the book and Val’s vivid descriptions gave the book a powerful punch and that’s one of the reasons I loved it so much and why I believe the book is an amazing start in the series.

Full of action, descriptions, crime, murder, thriller and a fantastic main character… Val Penny’s “Hunter’s Chase” is here to take the spotlight (for a moment, just until the next book in the series arrives, then we can go crazy again) and take us in a rollercoaster of emotions and mystery.

And “what is the book, Jess?” you may ask, it’s called “Barnabas Tew and the Case of the Missing Scarab“, and it’s a Mystery Fiction type of book, about a detective in Victorian era, and I will leave my thoughts for the review. So here are some information about the book and author.

Barnabas Tew and the Case of the Missing Scarab

A terrible kidnapping has occurred; one that promises to put an end to the status quo and could perhaps even put an end to the entire world. My Review

P1050984I don’t know how many books I have read in the mystery/detective genre, but I have found out that each and every book are unique to the authors’ style, and that’s so refreshing. With this book I found yet another book in genre that is so different from all the others I have read, including the classics.

This is the first book in the series, so we get to met the main character Barnabas Tew, and he’s a private detective. The funny thing is, he’s struggling. As I keep reading the book and get to know more about Barnabas, I found the all situation and his thought quite hilarious. The humor that Columbkill added to her book gave the plot some softness and uniqueness that I enjoyed.

But that’s not the only unique thing about this book. When you read the blurb you see that there is this paranormal/fantasy kind of thing going on, since Anubis, the Egyptian God of the Dead, makes an appearance. When I read that, I didn’t know what to think, but once I read the book… It works!

The reason why I’m using the word ‘unique’ a lot is because I don’t know what else to say to describe the book. It was a different take on the usual private detective book, an unexpected story, with characters that leave a mark in the plot, with a storyline quite intriguing because, let’s be honest, when was the last time you read a mystery/detective book with an Egyptian God as the client?

P1060086And if that paranormal aspect of the book hasn’t convince you to read the book, can I just remind you that there is humor in the book?… Image Barnabas, an Englishmen, private detective with big dreams, but whose abilities are not that over the top, and Wilfred, Barnabas’ loyal assistant and an interesting character, with perfect manners. And then imagine them going to the Underworld to find the Scarab God, the one who is responsible for rolling the sun across the sky each day. Imagine that adventure!

Can you imagine the journey to uncover each mystery and in the end solving the case. Imagine how much troubles Barnabas would put himself (and Wilfred) in? Doesn’t that sound fun? It does (and it was) sound fun to me. I went on a journey too, but to me is was a journey of laughter and having fun with Barnabas actions and how Wilfred would react to what’s going on. I think I could see this book series turn into a TV show. I would certainly watch it.

Because I find Egyptian Mythology very curious, I was excited to know the authors take on that. I would love to know more about it, but the way the characters, the Gods, were portrait made the book even more fun to read.

I do recommend this book and I can’t wait to read the next adventure this duo will have, and what kind of problems will happen.
