Historical Novels is a genre I have been discovering more and more. There are a lot of subgenres and a lot of possibilities because history is a vast thing for us. Tonight I bring a review of one of those books.

“A Mother’s Story“, written by Maggie Christensen, is a historical fiction novel, was published on 2nd November 2021.

About the Author

After a career in education, Maggie Christensen began writing contemporary women’s fiction portraying mature women facing life-changing situations, and historical fiction set in her native Scotland. Her travels inspire her writing, be it her trips to visit family in Scotland, in Oregon, USA or her home on Queensland’s beautiful Sunshine Coast. Maggie writes of mature heroines coming to terms with changes in their lives and the heroes worthy of them. Her writing has been described by one reviewer as like a nice warm cup of tea. It is warm, nourishing, comforting and embracing.

From the small town in Scotland where she grew up Scotland, Maggie was lured to Australia by the call ‘Come and teach in the sun’. Once there, she worked as a primary school teacher, university lecturer and in educational management. My Review

I love the idea of follow the characters as they go on a journey to uncovering their past and their family. I love the ancestry aspect of the story and I would love to one day do an ancestry test and learn more about my family and maybe find the lost half-sister that my grandmother has out there. That been said, I was very curious to read this book an learn more about how the characters connect.

As we follow Rhona, Joy and Nell in their own personal story, we go to Scotland an Australia. The idea of motherhood and family… War times and more present times in a dual time line that go us not only emotional, but intrigued by the story and how everything is uncover.

Set in beautiful places, with powerful and realistic characters, this novel made me emotional and curious at each chapter. As the synopsis says “Three women. Three mothers. Three astonishing stories.“ That’s what got me going, that’s what I love. I love that the story was about these women and about their families.

About the Author

Mick is a hopeless romantic who was born in England and spent fifteen years roaming around the world in the pay of HM Queen Elizabeth II in the Royal Air Force before putting down roots and realizing how much he missed the travel. He’s replaced it somewhat with his writing, including reviewing books and supporting fellow saga and romance authors in promoting their novels.

My Review

Quick note: For those that don’t know this series I recommend you start with “A Wing and a Prayer”, as this book is the third book in the series.

As we follow our amazing friends, the women of the Air Transport Auxiliary Mystery Club, life continue after the previous book. I love reading historical novels set during any of the WW in this saga subgenre, because of the sense of community. In this story, there is that, plus the context of the plot, and the characters background.

There is still mystery and action, and despite knowing the characters and their life, I still was surprised. They felt like family members that I got to spent vacation with. Not a tropical setting, but the historical aspects that the author used took me to another place and time, which was just as good for me.

Overall, it was amazing to go back to this series and see where the story would go next. The danger, the mystery, the resilience and the action that got things going and got me curious and focus at each page.

“Red Rose” Review

About the Author

Katie Ward always knew she wanted to write for a living. However, she was told by her careers advisor that “it might be more appropriate for you to work in a shop”. When Katie didn’t get the grades she needed to get into college, she negotiated a three month trial. After successfully completing the course she secured a place at her first choice university to study Journalism.

After realising she wanted to be an author, Katie moved to Dublin where she worked her way up from receptionist to Executive Assistant at Merrill Lynch. Katie continued to write in her spare time, submitting her short story into the “Do the Write Thing” competition being run by Irish TV show ‘Seoige and O’Shea’. This story was originally written when Katie was 14 after she was inspired by an article in her favourite teen magazine. Katie was the only non-Irish author selected to have her story published in an anthology of the same name which reached 19 in the Irish Best sellers List. Katie was also shortlisted for a competition judged by MAN Booker Prize winning author Roddy Doyle which was run by Metro Eireann newspaper.

Katie currently lives in Devon with her cat (aka ‘Her Royal Fluffiness’) where she sings in a community choir and has recently taken up Archery. Katie’s favourite author has been Roald Dahl since she was a child as she loves the dark edge he brings to his books. On the flip side though, Katie loves Disney, magic, unicorns and a good rom com film at the cinema with her friends.

My Review

New Adult is a genre that I’m reading more in the last few months, and this book was part of that list.

As we follow Autumn in her journey were met her loved ones, and see how brave she was for making decision to find happiness. It kind of made me want to go on a journey like this one, of getting out of my comfort zone. Yet, the book has another side of it, one that was emotional and that made me rethink a lot of things.

The relevant issues and experiences that Autumn and those around her go through was a good message and very thought provoking. There were difficult things to go through, there were emotional moments from the very beginning.

And even though I love the idea of going to another city and going on a self-discovery journey, that I really loved more was the interactions between the characters, it was the love, and it was the heart-warming side of the story that touched my heart and made me wonder more.

Overall, I enjoyed the book. I loved the rollercoaster and the journey until the very ending.

“The Score” Review

Tonight I bring you two reviews. This week my schedule at work has been all over the place since it has been different ones, that’s why I’m posting only now. But stay tune because you may like these books.

My Review

This isn’t the first book by Kerry Kaya that I have ready, and I may have liked this one even more than the previous one.

Going back to the world, going back to this gangland story… it was interesting and I was hooked yet again.

We continue following the characters lives, we get to go on a dangerous journey with them and I love the thrill and the mystery that still exists.

Fast paced, exciting and very intriguing. Although I don’t have many experiences with Thrillers in a gangland genre, I was fascinated by the interactions the tone of the writing and the compelling characters.

Overall, I enjoyed the story and I’m curious about other books by the author.

About the Author

Natalie’s passion for reading became a compulsion to write when she attended a ten-week course in creative writing some sixteen or so years ago. She takes delight in creating short stories of which more than forty have been published, but it was her lifelong love of Regency romance that led her to turn from contemporary romantic fiction to try her hand at her favourite genre. My Review

Historical romance is a genre I love, as you all that follow my reviews may know by now. Regency was how I started and I was very curious about Natalie Kleinman’s book.

In this novel we follow Prudence and Jack, two people that know one another which made the story touching and interesting. As I read the story, knowing already – thanks to the synopsis – some elements of the plot, I wonder how Prudence and Jack met, and how life would get them back together.

The tittle is the essence of the book, I could understand Prudence’s thoughts and action while grieving, an I understand how pride can many times be in the way of reconciliation. The story was emotional, but also dynamic, as it give us interesting character – main and secondary – and a good interaction in terms of social and personal contexts.

Overall, Natalie Kleinman did a briliant job, and I was not disappointed. With each page and the unfolding of the situation with Prudence’s father and then with Jack, as well as the journey she takes to her family’s house, but also a mental journey, I was captivated by every moment of reading this story. Just as I expected from this author’s work.

About the Author

Deirdre lives in Brighton, on the south coast of England. She writes women’s and psychological fiction under her own name, and as Zara Thorne. Becoming an author was a childhood dream, although she didn’t have much of a clue as to what it meant. My Review

Psychological Thriller or Suspense novel is a genre I have been reading more and more. I love movies or TV shows that have that vibe, but I never read many books that had those characteristics. ‘The Girl In The Tunnel’ was very interesting and if it were a movie of tv show, it would be my jam years ago, now it’s the perfect book for a cozy weekend reading and jumping into the story.

Set in London this book follows Ellen and a mystery. We met Carl and connect with him as he and Ellen begin to know one another. There is a sister and her married lover, Matt. There is an underground scenery. All perfect to set the mood for a thriller.

Because of the genre of the book I won’t go in details. But, what I can say is that it was very intriguing. The tone of the book caught my attention from the beginning. It made curious sometimes, then other times I was wondering about the new information and all the “what if’s”.

Overall, it was enjoyable and had a good amount of mystery, suspense and social interactions.

My Review

When I first saw this title I was so curious. There are a lot of books with catching names, bu this one really jumped to my attention. So I joined the adventure to learn what was going on for a nun to join a Viking Warrior. Arranged marriage that was the reason and I find those kind of tropes quite interesting, since they can take different possibilities in terms of path.

Amée Évreaux was an amazing character. I could understand her in many ways, and that made it enjoyable to follow her journey. Jorund Jötunnson is a norseman with a heart of gold. Yes, he is and we get to discover that with Amée, while their relationship grows.

There is romance, there is drama, there is a sweet tone to the story too that I liked. And I love the cultural aspect. That’s always something I look forward to see and figure out when I read about the past and how societies worked back then.

Overall, it was amazing and I love Amée specially she was the kind of person I would love to have as a friend.

My Review

This is the third and final book in the series and we have yet another amazing novel full of romance, touch of humor and drama, and with an enemies to lovers troupe that I quite enjoy in historical romances.

As we follow Charity Brookes and Griffith Philpot, we go on a discovery of their personalities, background and dreams, and we also get to see all the sparks when they get together. They were different and yet it made so much sense seeing them together.

Charity is such a light character, one of those that makes me smile, that is brilliant and immediately captivated me, especially when she turns into a firecracker. Griff is much calmer, chivalrous, and a strong character that gave a balance to the interactions between him and Charity, making the chemistry fun to read.

Emotional, exciting and with a happy ending. “How Not to Chaperon a Lady” was fantastic and exactly what I need to read. Virginia Heath never disappoints me with her charming male characters and the connection I always feel for the female characters. This book wasn’t different, and having the enemies to lovers added the childhood connection was perfect.

Overall, I loved it and it was a good final book for the series.

My Review

I have previously read some of Jessica Redland’s books and I have enjoyed them, so I jumped to the opportunity of reading this one.

First of all, The Starfish Café is the most amazing name ever. It immediately gave me some vibes of the location and learning about it and all the people regularly visiting it, felt like it was part of my small hometown. That’s the feeling I had while reading the book. It had a familiar feel to it.

Hollie and Jake… two characters I absolutely love. The way their relationship started and developed, the uncovering of their pasts and how it made them who they are... I could understand it and I couldn’t stop reading because I needed more.

Grief, drama, resilience, family, friendship, love,… and Christmas. All things I like in a book. Specially the plus: the cute dog. This book had many messages in it. It was emotional and it was a rollercoaster. Thankfully I didn’t read it at the beach, where everyone could see my tears falling down my cheeks. But it didn’t just made me cry, it also made me smile. Not that crying was bad, it was a good thing. I didn’t even realized I was crying, which means I really was into the story and connecting with the characters.

Overall, it was emotional. It was happy and powerful. It was lovely and it was comforting. And I enjoyed every second of it.

Weekends have been beach days for me, that’s why I’m posting later in the night. The good thing about beach days is that I can read without any worries. And this book was one of those that I read during my relaxing days at the beach.

“Wild Blue Yonder“, written by M W Arnold, is a Historical novel, in the saga subgenre, the Second Book in The Air Transport Auxiliary Mystery Club series, published on 26th July 2021.

Synopsis

About the Author

Mick is a hopeless romantic who was born in England and spent fifteen years roaming around the world in the pay of HM Queen Elizabeth II in the Royal Air Force before putting down roots and realizing how much he missed the travel. He’s replaced it somewhat with his writing, including reviewing books and supporting fellow saga and romance authors in promoting their novels.

My Review

I had the chance of reading the previous book last year, so I was very excited to continue the journey with these characters in this fascinating setting. First of all, I suggest you read book one to get a fuller experience of this series and to understand better the characters’ life.

Yes, we still are following the lovely ladies of the ATA (Air Transport Auxiliary). We learn how their lives are at the moment and what adventures and obstacles will appear in their path.

I won’t give any spoilers, but I can say that there is drama and mystery, and a Hollywood connection. And of course we still have the friendship and the WWII setting that gives an atmosphere of going back in time.

Overall, it was a fantastic sequel and I’m still fascinated with the entire ATA element of the story. Plus, I loved going back to this story and feeling as if I was checking up on my old time friends.
