Parceria com a Livraria Good Books

My Review

First of all, as soon as I read the synopsis of this novel I got a big smile on my face, because I could remember of the even that divided the world, all thanks to a particular (white-gold/black-blue) dress. I was one of those that saw it as white and gold, no idea about you guys, but message me about it. Anyway, when I saw that this was a story inspire about that event, I thought it was funny and interesting and I really wanted to know how the author was going to explain what happened in terms of the fantasy and fiction elements that he was incorporating in this alternative world and time line.

Since I was one of those that saw the white and gold, I felt even more invested in the story as I uncover the secrets and follow the White and Gold People in this storyline. It was quite a brilliant idea from the author and I was intrigued from page one.

We met plenty of characters that are very refreshing and interesting, and the subject that are talked about, besides the superpowers and the government action and the way society views those that are different that the ‘normality’, made me think. There was a sense of freedom for me when reading this book and thinking about the Goldies.

One thing I enjoyed was the portrait of relationships and the interactions between Goldies and Blueys. I quite liked seeing the cultural change and the way people deal with events and try to follow a new path after something major happen. It talks about a lot of things that are part of being human, our feelings (love, hate, fear, insecurities, …), our responsibilities, our freedom, our safety… Yes, there are sex scenes, there are battle scenes… That’s also part of our present and our reality, it has always been a part of us, why wouldn’t it make an appearance in this story?

Overall, I love the concept of the story and the thought provoking aspects in it, as well as the pace that may have started slow but kept climbing, never letting go of my mind, and by grabbing my attention it allows me to enjoy each page and each unexpected scene in a very enjoyable and fun way, that made me feel as if I was part of the plot as a character instead of just a outsider looking in.

One thought that this book left me with was: Maybe I should own my Goldie side and enjoy life. Are you a Goldie or a Bluey?

Do I recommend this novel? If you like Urban fantasies, and are intrigued about the all dress craziness, as well as want to see where the author took that idea… then I recommend it, but be open minded, be curious and get ready.

Thankful Sunday: BiblioBeautyBooks

Hello Friends!

Today I wanted to come here and write this Thank You post to an amazing person, a dear friends of mine.

This Sunday it’s a Thank You to Chelsea!

Chelsea, aka BiblioBeautyBooks, a fellow bookstagrammer, blogger and writer. A lovely person that has written powerful and thought provoking books and that deserves all the love in the world.

I first met Chelsea via her Instagram page and I immediately fell in love with her photos and words. She was a kind person that had her arms open and welcomed everyone to her DMs. And I don’t even remember exactly how we started to talk because I truly feel like I know her for years.

In her Instagram account you will found book recommendations, reviews, and writing updates of her novels. And one of the subjects that is very close to the heart for her is Mental Health, so if you need a virtual hugs and someone to talk to, or read some amazing poetry that just gives you a connection, you will find it in Chelsea and her writing.

Then of course, I got to met her by reading her books. It’s a different experience, and by reading her poems, I was able to share my thoughts and our friendship grew. I’m now finishing reading her new poetry book and will have a review very soon. Meanwhile, you can get her books here:

Unspoken Agreement | Sincerely, Me | Only Human | A Delicate Flower |When The Parachute Doesn’t Open | Allergic To Air

Another stop you should do is on Chelsea’s blog.

There you will find the full book reviews and of course information about her books.

And speaking of books, did you know that one of her books is going to be traditionally published? No?! They you really need to check out her website and Instagram page and stay tune to all the news, and sometimes you will be able to even apply to be a Beta Reader for one of her novels.

I tend to draw to novels that draw away from love stories and more towards suspense and personal experiences shared from one person to the next. I love books that make you feel for the character and give you a sense of fulfillment when you claim their happiness as you’re own.

I am always busy with school, work and with my family but I always leave time out of my day to relax with a book and some tea. For me, it’s a form of escape from the world that I am surrounded by, where I can escape to a world where I can draw a connection to the book characters and their stories.

Thankful Sunday: Literary Critique

Hello Friends!

So I decided to start doing something special, a Thank You kind of post. A thank you to the people that have given me support through out this journey.

This Sunday it’s a Thank You to Sam!

Sam, aka Literary Critique, is a blogger, bookstagrammer, booktuber and writer. She’s my best friend on Instagram and I so wish I can visit her soon. But let’s focus on Sam…

instagram Sam

First of all, I met Sam thanks to Instagram, and if you use that platform you should check her out. From the amazing photos to the discussions in the posts, not only is she friendly and open to talk about books and writing, she gives amazing book recommendations and it’s always interesting to see what books she’s reading because if I have read them, we can share our options.

In her Instagram account she also does some writing update. And since I’m very curious about her book, of course I’m always looking forward to those videos and posts.

Also, let’s not forget her fur baby Kent! He’s a cutie pie. Always brings me a smile when I see him in Sam’s photos.

Speaking of writing, let’s not forget Twitter, where Sam updates us on her writing and gives advices, share her thoughts and sometimes generate some discussion on different aspects of bookish life (readers and writers).

Another platform is her blog. Like I said, she’s a blogger, and she posts very regularly. From reviews of books, series, to writing tips, blogging about our bookish life like talking about current reads, top favorites and tags. And this is an amazing place for everyone to interact with her because of various reason:

  • One, she makes many good points in her posts.
  • Two, her posts have many topics and even if it’s a review of a book you haven’t read yet, you can always read it because there aren’t spoilers and when there are, she will let us all know beforehand.
  • Three, she’s funny and you can relate to what she is say. You can connect with her, since she’s not a snob or narcissistic.
  • Four, you go check out and see for yourself.

On another note…

More recently, since the start of the year, Sam has entered the world of the Bookish community in Youtube. In her channel you can find reviews of books, bookish boxes unboxing, tags, TBR and Wraps, and let’s not forget the extra writing updates that I’m always dying for.

She did an introduction video on her channel and here it is:

Let’s say, that I love her and she’s one of the sweetest, funniest, friendlier person I met, and that’s why I needed to start this feature with her. She deserves all the love in the world.

That been said, go check out all her social media platforms, and enjoy all she has to say. You won’t regret it!

Guest Post

Guest Post: “The Do’s and Don’ts of Writing”, by Sam R. (Literary Khaleesi)

I don’t want to be a teacher. But I love to lecture. I don’t know why, I just do. And today’s “lecture”-if you didn’t read the title of this guest post-is about what to do and what not to do when you’re writing. And, of course, I don’t follow my own advice even though I really should. I’m hoping you all will take from this and apply it to your own writing, and maybe even learn something. So, here goes.

DO
WRITE EVERYDAY
This is a total given, obviously. But in reality there is truth to this. Writing everyday betters yourself as an author. You want to find the right place to do this, too. If you’re uncomfortable, chances are your desire to right will be limited to once in a while. Also, create a routine. When I was writing my first draft, Legend, I created a routine where I’d sit down for at least two hours (not all at once,) and just write. Word count was important, but I didn’t worry too much about it as long as I got those two hours in. Because why? Because writing EVERYDAY is important.

CARRY A JOURNAL
Here’s some more advice that I don’t follow, but is useful. I’ve tried doing this, but we live in day and age where we have constant access to technology, i.e. our phones. I have a notepad dedicated to bookish thoughts and rambles. Now, I say carry a journal because physically writing your thoughts down tend to be much more helpful. I don’t know why, but that’s the case. I do have a tiny little notebook that was intended for this purpose, and I hope that one day it will be put to good use, but that day isn’t anywhere near me just yet.

READ, READ, READ…..DID I MENTION READ?
Yeah, read.  Just like my first two points, this is also important. Reading is what got me into writing. And reading also keeps my brain fresh. Reading other authors works and learning their styles actually helped form my own style and create my own ideas. I answered a QOTD on bookstagram about how I write scenes, and I admitted that I pulled from books and twisted and pulled and punched until another author’s scene became my own. Reading affects how we write, and if you want to write well, I suggest starting by picking up a book.

WRITE WHAT YOU WANT, NO WHAT ANYONE ELSE WANTS
Just recently I told a few members of my family that I’m writing a book, that I have written a book. My family is very…..conservative and typical. I wish typical wasn’t the word to use, but unfortunately what we want to be typical isn’t how it is just yet. Anyways, my family isn’t exactly supportive of my dreams and career decision. My dad is trying to act like he is; he made a comment about a book I started when I was like 12 about a magic mirror set during WWII. I never finished it, and, as I think of it, it seems like a good historical fiction novel to write-or at least take a quick look back at it. So, his comment was that I should stop writing my current WIP, Legend, and pick the WWII story up instead. I understand he’s at least trying, but I don’t think he understands that what I’m writing now is what speaks to me now. I put the history novel down almost a decade ago. Clearly there was a reason why.
So, the moral of this paragraph is that I’m not going to write what my father wants me to. I’m not going to write what anyone else wants me to. And if the day comes that my old man wants to take a look at Legend, I already know he’s going to dislike it. He’s a conservative man set in old ways, and I exploit men like him in my novel and bring important views into the light, views not a lot of white men, or men in general agree with. Write what YOU want, and don’t let anyone else’s opinion get in the way.

GET FEEDBACK FROM TRUSTED FRIENDS
About a month ago I picked out a few bookstagrammers and friends of mine as Beta Readers. This decision is a very important one. Don’t just randomly pick family members or close friends. Your introductory readers need to be people who’s opinion you value, and if they say something negatively-most likely for your own good and for the sake of the draft-you need to be able to take it like a strong person. Don’t melt under the pressure and critique. Part of being an author is living under the pressure and wearing the good and bad reviews like a cape. And if you happen to get published, the good and the bad won’t stop at your friends. It’ll be from the world. So, chose your friends wisely for the role of Beta because it is an important one.

REALIZE ONCE YOU’RE PUBLISHED THAT THE STORY IS NO LONGER YOURS
I think I’m struggling with this one the most. As of right now, Legend is very much all mine. No other eyes but my own have seen it, not even my boyfriend’s. (He’s been trying to sneak a peek haha!) This point is especially true if you’re writing a series. Once that first book is out, your readers are the ones shadow guiding you through the writing process. Yes, you have a say in what you write, but this is the introduction anymore. You have an audience to please. And as I say that, do remember that you have yourself to please, too (you, ultimately, come first.) As long as your remember any published works are no longer yours, becoming an excellent author will be easier done than said.

KEEP RESEARCH ORGANIZED AND ALWAYS ACCESSIBLE
Back to the journal. That could be a place where you keep your research, especially if the journal is always on your person. But like I said in the journal paragraph, we live in a technological world. All my research and notes is on an app called Padlet. Everything is color coded, columned and sectioned off. It’s easy to read and quick to navigate. That’s how it should be.

DON’T

FORGET ABOUT WORD COUNT
Word count is nothing to freak out over. If you’re doing a program such as NaNoWriMo, then yes, ignore this piece of advice. But unless that isn’t the case, please heed what I say. Quantity has no hold over quality. I spent a month going on two battling both Qs, and while I did finish my first draft, I’m almost positive the quality of my first take would be a whole lot better if a part of me wasn’t concerned with keeping track of how many words I got in a day. So, don’t stress over the numbers.
Also, don’t worry about anyone else’s word counts either. They are a completely different person, and should have no affect on you once so ever. Alright?

STAY AWAY FROM SOCIAL MEDIA
At least during your allotted writing time. I made this mistake one too many times. I have a highlight on my bookstagram profile following me as I wrote, from day one to finish. And while that is cool, it prevented me from writing. It chipped time of me getting words in. It took away from me doing what I love to do. Social media can be a good thing, but it can also be a bad thing. And in my case it’s riding the line. If I hadn’t finished my first draft, I’d say it was pretty bad. So, try to stray from using your phone while writing.

DON’T READ BOOKS ABOUT WRITING AND EXPECT A BIG CHANGE
This makes me laugh so much when I see all those people online purchasing writing books, and thinking that it’ll change how they write, that it’ll make them better. And maybe that is so, but the chances of that are slim to none. Those books are directed to the author. That’s how the author writes, that’s how the author recommends you to write. But we are all different. Our styles are different, our voices are different. How can a writing book make us better when we’re already better on our own? I fell into this loop over the summer. Want to know how it went? I didn’t get past the third chapter. I realized I was wasting my time trying to be someone else and not who I am. My tone, my voice, my writing is perfect the way it is. And I can only better it by writing and reading everyday (reading actual books that aren’t about writing. Too much writing can be a turn off for the mind, fyi!)

IT WON’T BE PERFECT THE FIRST TIME ‘ROUND
I’m sorry, but you’re a fool if you think your first draft is ready to be completed as is. Unless you’re someone like V.E. Schwab who edits extensively as she goes then maybe so. And props to you for being part of the ~1% who can do that. Schwab’s first draft is like a third draft. Mine….well, mine is a first draft. A crappy, no good first draft in need of LOTS of help. Don’t stress that is isn’t perfect.
Also, don’t make everything in your story fit to your plot. After all, this is only a first draft. Chances are you’ll change at least half of it. So, forcing scenes to play into the plot isn’t the best way to do so. Everything will come together as you go through edits and rewrite that second, third, fourth draft. No force, just time and effort, and everything will fall into place.
Another thing is this: don’t tell us everything about your character when first meeting them. You want to drop a few details and then drop a few more later on, and later on, and later on. Those will add up and the reader will learn who this character is naturally. And eventually your character will tie into the plot and the little details you’ve dropped every so often will make sense. Dropping it at one time will cause forgetfulness (too much all at once,) and it won’t help your plot either.

PEOPLE PLEASING IS NOT WORTH THE THE STRUGGLE
You are the only person there is to please. Unless you’re already published and working on a series. But if not, you’re the only one who’s opinion should matter. It’s your story, isn’t it?

STOP CHANGING YOUR MIND
I had this problem for SIX years! Six years I changed, and, changed, and changed Legend, and where did it get me? No where. I finally said to myself, “Sam, stop it! You know how you want this book to go. So why are you doing this to yourself?” It’s fear that makes you continuously change your mind. Which is why your change your story. So, tell yourself to quit it, and get a move on. Your book is waiting on you, and wants to be written.

and most importantly….

WRITING IS HARD
You can’t underestimate writing. It’s a tricky thing. It’s a difficult thing. Writing trips you when you least expect you. I’ve met mainly people who think it’s easy, that anyone can do it. Sure, anyone can write, but how many people can throw together made up characters into a made up world with a plot and execute it properly? Not everyone. So, don’t forget that writing isn’t easy and you’re not alone if you’re struggling. Trust me, we’re all struggling, even those best sellers like Stephen King and J.K. Rowling.

If you have anymore questions about writing, I do have a blog, an email, my DMs on bookstagram are always open. I like to think I’m a friendly person, just ask Jess lol! Thanks for checking out my guest post about writing. I sincerely hope you were able to take away from this post, and if so, please do let me know! I would love to hear back from any and all of you!

About Author

27ef868543abf9c4e16439c1aeb8f0bdRachel Blaufeld is a bestselling author of Romantic Suspense, New Adult, Coming-of-Age Romance, and Sports Romance. A recent poll of her readers described her as insightful, generous, articulate, and spunky. Originally a social worker, Rachel creates broken yet redeeming characters. She’s been known to turn up the angst like cranking up the heat in the dead of winter.

A devout coffee drinker and doughnut eater, Rachel spends way too many hours in local coffee shops, downing the aforementioned goodies while she plots her ideas. Her tales may all come with a side of angst and naughtiness, but end as lusciously as her treats.

As a side note, Blaufeld, also a long-time blogger and an advocate of woman-run anything, is fearless about sharing her opinion. She captured the ears of stay-at-home and working moms on her blog, BacknGrooveMom, chronicling her adventures in parenting tweens and running a business, often at the same time. To her, work/life/family balance is an urban legend, but she does her best.

Rachel has also blogged for The Huffington Post and Modern Mom. Most recently, her insights can be found in USA TODAY, where she shares conversations at “In Bed with a Romance Author” and reading recommendations over at “Happy Ever After.”

Rachel lives around the corner from her childhood home in Pennsylvania with her family and two beagles. Her obsessions include running, coffee, basketball, icing-filled doughnuts, antiheroes, and mighty fine epilogues.

When she isn’t writing, she can be found courtside, tweeting about hoops as her son plays, or walking around the house wearing earplugs while her other son, the drummer, bangs away.

To connect with Rachel, she’s most active in her private reading group, The Electric Readers, where she shares insider information and intimate conversation with her readers.

My Review

P1060805This book was my introduction to Rachel Blaufeld’s books and writing style, and I must say that it made me curious to read more of Rachel’s books.

This novel appealed to me because of the blurb. It got me at “statistics professor by day, shirtless blogger by night“, and the fact that the characters were bloggers is something I can connect with and that was fun. Speaking of blogs, Andi’s posts are so funny! Loved them! And I think it was a great touch to the story, because it give us some insight to some aspects of her personality.

P1060921So, Andonia (awesome name), aka Andi, is an anonymous blogger and she’s a single mom, meets Reid, a kind and handsome man. I’m not going to describe the plot, but let’s say that the book is a romance that made me sigh, shake my head, and laugh. Their relationship developed from the first time they met face to face, until the end of the novel, and it was great to read because it was dynamic, cute, interesting, and there was that “when will the secret be uncover?” kind of feeling.

The characters had their own defined personality and voice, and I could relate to somethings and empathize with them. Plus, they felt real, and if they were I would definitely be their friend. There was also the fact that Andi is a mom and that changes the dynamic in the plot and the interactions between the characters. And speaking of her daughter, she was so cute! And Andi is a good mom, you can see how much she loves her daughter and the fact that she would do anything to keep her daughter safe, and give her everything that she needs.

P1060947The storyline was great too. It was engaging, funny, relatable, sweet, and it let me happy in the end of the book. There was that secret pending, and the drama and tension because of it. There is some fun and action scenes and some slow and intriguing scenes that opened up for the understanding of the characters’ personality.

Overall, I loved this book and I recommend it to everyone that loves romance novels. It was an exciting book, full of fun moments and romance, with a writing style, plot and characters that grabbed my attention from page one.

Blog Tour

Happy Birthday to Rachel’s Random Resources!

Hello Friends!

Sem Título

A couple months ago I joined a blog tour via an author’s request. That’s how I met Rachel. Since then I have been joining other bloggers in tours hosted by Rachel, at Rachel’s Random Resources.

Today, her website turns 1year old. That mean she has been work hard and organizing blog tours, blog blitzes, publication day celebrations and cover reveals for a large number of authors across all genres. And she’s doing this full time, and I can tell you that she’s very professional and creative.

As a thank you and happy birthday gift, I’m writing this post promoting her amazing work with the blog tours.

So, if you are a blogger who is interested in taking part in the blog tours, please sign up and because a host. And if you are an author then check out all the information about the services she has to offer.

About the Website

This website “Rachel’s Random Resources is a place where authors can get help with their book promotional needs, and where bloggers (like me!) can be a part of something special by join a blog tour for a book and author they found interesting or love.

Rachel will organize basically every book celebration: cover reveal, publication day celebration, Anniversary celebration or a typical blog tour or blog blitz… And if you are a blogger you can be a part of it. And if you are an author you may find just what you need and want in terms of promotion, so you should check out her website to learn more.

Guest Post: The ABCs of Male Characters, by Paula Houseman

There’s a new(ish) man in town. A stereotype called the beta male is roaming the streets.

Unlike a former holder of the post, the alpha-hole, Mr Beta is not cruising to pick up a one-night stand. Mr Beta has likely got a leash in his fist with a yappy toy poodle attached to the other end of it and dragging him along.

Where the alpha-hole—he of the chiselled jawline and sculpted body—inhabits bodice-ripping, historical or Mills & Boon novels, Mr namby-pamby Beta mostly inhabits clean and wholesome/sweet romances. A genre that allows maybe the odd kiss, but not kissy-kissy. So, hands-off, no foreplay. Kinda reads like a children’s book, no? And yet, this genre is growing in popularity. Do lots of modern women want chasteness restored? Are women wanting to grow back their hymens?

COME ON!

Sorry, it’s like saying sex is unnatural; like saying sex is a dirty word (and you can’t use any of these either in clean and wholesome).

Well, I say, gimme dirty, baby, baby! You know, like in the movies. Go ahead and leave a trail of clothes strewn here and there—jeans, T, bra and panties discarded haphazardly; go ahead and knock the tchotchkes off the side table en route to the bedroom. But …

When you remove my bodice, would you mind very much not ripping it? And can you please make sure that the stuff you knock off the furniture is unbreakable? I’ve probably forked out a shitload for the threads and knick-knacks, so can we just leave them intact?

These demands rule out the alpha-hole, who probably already lost some gravitas when female protagonists grew balls and started wearing power suits.

It would have been around this time that beta-man gained a foothold. With woman on top, she needed a counterpoise. So, exit, alpha-hole; enter, beta male.

Oh, beta-dude might drag ballsy chick off to the bedroom, but he’d likely stop and pick up and fold each item of discarded clothing along the way. Before long, he’d become pussy-whipped, and it follows that she’d get bored with him.

The logical solution, then? A middle-ground approach. That would be the alpha male. He’s a nice balance between the two aforementioned male stereotypes. Or is he?

There are some variations in what constitutes alpha and beta-blokes. Here’s the thing, though. They’re constructed along the lines of the fairy-tale framework with its cardboard cut-out characters. And that’s the trouble with stereotypes. They’re continually revised and cleansed versions of a former poster child, with the original buried under it all. And the new and ‘improved’ versions can lack substance, or don’t display much of it.

Beta doesn’t do it for me. I don’t want the kind of male character I feel the need to breastfeed. And alpha-male? Warrior. Stand-up guy. James Bond-ish. Knight in shining armour. Probably doesn’t fart. Well, I do, so I’d feel un-alpha and inadequate against him. Anyway, I don’t need someone to rescue me.

Some of the male characters in my books are alpha-holes, alpha and beta males. But they’re caricatures to draw attention to the idiocy of defining people by a limited bunch of traits. My male lead, on the other hand, is so much more because, like in the earliest uncut stories—the Greek myths—I want a complete person. Not a barbarian, who acts on all raw thoughts, feelings and impulses, of course. But one who can admit to these aspects of character that moralism has shamed us for even having.

So, you can keep your alpha-holes and your alpha and beta males. I want the whole bloody alphabet. Give me an alpha-beta-gamma-delta-epsilon-zêta-êta-thêta-iota-kappa-lambda-mu-nu-xi-omikron-pi-rho-sigma-tau-upsilon-phi-chi-psi-omega man!

Complicated? Maybe. But real, and that much more interesting.

Odyssey in aTeacup

Author Bio

photo copy – Version 3Paula Houseman was once a graphic designer. But when the temptation to include ‘the finger’ as part of a logo for a forward-moving women’s company proved too much, she knew it was time to give away design. Instead, she took up writing.

She found she was a natural with the double entendres (God knows she’d been in enough trouble as a child for dirty wordplay).

As a published writer of earthy chick lit and romantic comedy, Paula gets to bend, twist, stretch and juice up universal experiences to shape reality the way she wants it, even if it is only in books. But at the same time, she can make it more real, so that her readers feel part of the sisterhood. Or brotherhood (realness has nothing to do with gender).

Through her books, Paula also wants to help the reader escape into life and love’s comic relief. And who doesn’t need to sometimes?

Her style is a tad Monty Pythonesque because she adores satire. It helps defuse all those gaffes and thoughts that no one is too proud of.

Paula lives in Sydney, Australia with her husband. No other creatures. The kids have flown the nest and the dogs are long gone.

Mace Bugen might have been an achondroplastic dwarf, 43 inches tall with an average size head and torso set on small, twisted legs—but that didn’t mean he was an idiot or a pushover. In truth, he was smarter than most; over the years, he learned to effectively turn what society in those days called a handicap into a powerful tool he could use to his advantage.

“When I was a kid,” he once said, “I’d ask myself, Why is that guy on the football team? Why can’t I be on the team? Why didn’t God give me the height so I could be the hero?”

“Then at some point I figured it out: I gotta do something special to let ’em know I’m me.”

In The Little Gate Crasher: The Life And Photos Of Mace Bugen, I remember my amazing great-Uncle Mace Bugen through his journey as a first-generation Jewish-American kid in working class Philipsburg, NJ to becoming the first celebrity selfie-artist—way ahead of his time.

Featuring vintage photos of Mace with his exploits, The Little Gate Crasher captures three decades of American pop culture, seen through the unique lens of Mace and his gate-crashing exploits.

Underneath his antics, we meet a complex man who continually defies others expectations and meets life on his own terms. Mace becomes a successful businessman and devoted son to his aging parents. But in his gate-crashing antics, we best get to see Mace’s unique combination of guile, cunning and sense of entitlement, which he used to engineer photos of himself with some of the biggest celebrities of his day. If people were going to stare at him all of his life, he would give them something to see.

The Little Gate Crasher features over 50 vintage photos of Mace with celebrities, athletes and politicians, including Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, Muhammed Ali, Richard Nixon, Jane Russel, Joe DiMaggio and more.

Ruth Roth is a straight shooter. Pity Cupid’s not.

Smart-mouth Ruth is an inspirational humour columnist for a popular women’s magazine. Recently divorced, she has found the love of her life. Without any help, mind you, from the little fat love god. Ruth has decided she herself is her one and only.

And she’s in a comfy place. Why wouldn’t she be? No need to yell ‘Put the bloody toilet seat down!’ No need to hoover toe-nail clippings off the carpet.

But then a silver-tongued Prince Charming fronts up in his shiny Merc and tickles her discarded, little-girl fantasies. He tells her their love is written in the stars.

It must be a misprint.

A romance with this particular PC is not so PC! Still …

Ruth’s life plays out more like ancient myth than fairytale. And what hot-blooded woman can resist forbidden fruit?

There’s a problem, though. Ruth does not have a hot-blooded mum. Ruth has a pain-in-the-arse mum whose squawking disapproval cranks the taboo up a notch.

All the more reason to take up with the stud! But it means taking on the harpy.

Tensions mount, and even Ruth’s man can’t protect her from the trash-talking voices in her head. It looks like he can’t muzzle his own either. When an earth-shattering revelation causes him to give her grief, it makes her feel like she’s dating her mother.

Taking the kind of advice she doles out to her readers is not so easy, and Ruth wonders if this love can survive. More to the point, is it worth the trouble?

Love, romance, marriage, and a dark little secret. Shh … Small things let loose can grow out of hand.

Ruth Roth’s new husband can’t keep it in. If only he had all those years ago, things might be different now.

His big mouth sends every family member into hell. Except for Ruth’s late mother. She blows in from there. Seems the woman just won’t die. Or let up. Faaaark!

As if Mama’s earbashing isn’t enough, everyone else needs a scapegoat. Ruth is it. Somehow, this mess is her fault.

With everything falling apart, she feels overwhelmed. Until a hunky celebrity pants man—who clearly wants to get into hers—befriends her and makes her feel all warm and fuzzy. At the same time, an educated silicone seductress has designs on hubby.

Temptation abounds. But it’s overshadowed when a startling discovery throws Ruth and her man into uncharted waters, and life comes crashing down.

Ruth has survived plenty with the help of her friends. And as a writer, her wry wit, dirty muse, and a bent for ancient mythology have sustained her. This, though, might be her undoing.

Archie Royle is a kind, funny, gentle man.

He’s also my dad. My storyteller. My hero.

Except he doesn’t remember my face any more.

His world, these days, doesn’t include me or his family.

Life may have changed for him, but he hasn’t given up on life.

Not at all.

It’s just different.

Dad still tells his stories, albeit for a new audience.

He makes people smile and chuckle. As he always did.

He’s a fighter, a survivor and maybe sometimes too clever for his own good! He’ll surprise you. I can assure you of that.

Welcome to Magic O’Clock, where time is irrelevant and hope is unlimited.

As Archie Royle takes his final breath, three sisters race to say their goodbyes.

Two don’t make it in time.

I do. And now, it’s all my fault they’re too late.

Despite him having dementia.

Despite them not visiting in over a month.

But I won’t let anger win.

After all, we’re all grieving, aren’t we?

Surely, as a family, we can let bygones be bygones.

It’s what Dad would want. Expect.

It’s what he deserves.

We have so much to be grateful for.

So many fond and magical memories to share.

Magical Memories is a fictional tale of loss, grief and moving on.

Blurb

A story of love and political intrigue, set against the backdrop of the English hunting shires and the streets of Victorian London and post revolutionary Paris

When Harriet Howard becomes Louis Napoleon’s mistress and financial backer and appears at his side in Paris in 1848, it is as if she has emerged from nowhere. How did the English daughter of a Norfolk boot-maker meet the future Emperor? Who is the mysterious Nicholas Sly and what is his hold over Harriet?

Can Harriet meet her obligations and return to her former life and the man she left behind? What is her involvement with British Government secret services? Can Harriet’s friend, jockey Tom Olliver, help her son Martin solve his own mystery: the identity of his father?

The central character is Harriet Howard and the action takes place between 1836 and 1873. The plot centres on Harriet’s relationships with Louis Napoleon and famous Grand National winning jockey, Jem Mason. The backdrop to the action includes significant characters from the age, including Lord Palmerston, Queen Victoria and the Duke of Grafton, as well as Emperor Napoleon III. The worlds of horse racing, hunting and government provide the scope for rural settings to contrast with the city scenes of London and Paris and for racing skulduggery to vie with political chicanery.

The Merest Loss is historical fiction with a twist. It’s pacy and exciting with captivating characters and a distinctive narrative voice.

Awards

Sunshine Blogger Award

Hello Friends!

I was nominated by Amy, The Little Booknerds in the Corner to do the Sunshine Blogger Award. It’s my first time doing blogger awards but it was fun!

What is the Sunshine Blogger Award?

The Sunshine Blogger Award is given to those who are creative, positive and inspiring while spreading sunshine to the blogging community.

The Sunshine Blogger Award

The Rules

1. Thank the blogger who nominated you by linking their blog

2.Answer the questions

3. Nominate 11 blogs with 11 questions

4. List the rules as well as display the Sunshine Award Logo on your post

Amy’s Questions for Me:

1. Do you prefer to read Kindle or physical books?

Both actually. Books are books to me. I love to have the physical books, but when I can’t get them because only eBook are available at the moment, I’m okay with it.

2. Have you tried audiobooks? If you have, what do you think of them?

I have read some audiobooks, but not that many. I actually thing they are quite useful. The ones I have listen too, I did it will doing some cleaning at home or driving.

3. Who’s a blogger you most aspire to? And why.

I don’t think I have a particular blogger I aspire to be. I have a lot of people (author, bloggers, teachers,…), human beings, that have touched my life in any way, and that I have in my hearts for making me think, love, feel free, and enjoy a good book. Anyway, I don’t aspire to me anyone else. I aspire to be the best version of myself. I aspire to keep being respectful, honest, kind and human. And as a blogger, I just aspire to be honest and respectful with my posts and keep having fun and connecting with people.

4. Can you listen to music while reading? If you can what music do you mostly listen to?

Sometimes I do. It always depends on my mood. I listen to about anything. I usually just go to Spotify and put on a random playlist in a genre and then change it when I fell like it.

5. If you could give the first half of 2018 a rating, what would you give it?

0 to 5? It would be a 5 for exciting. 4 for hard work. 4 for how many goals I accomplished so far (since I didn’t accomplished some of the goals I had in mind for this 1st half of 2018).

6. What do you enjoy most about blogging?

I enjoy being able to talk about books with people. And blogging opens up a door I didn’t have before.

7. Have you been to any conventions?

Not really. I have been to the annual book fair in Lisbon for the past 6 years, but that’s about it.

8. If you could give your past self-advice about blogging what would you tell yourself?

I only started this blog in January, but I have learned a lot. I would just say “Don’t stress about the post so much and just have fun.”

9. What time of the day do you normally read the most?

All the time. It depends on the day. When I was studying I would read during lunch break or once I got home, usually during the night. Now I’m on vacation so I read anytime I want.

10. How do you plan out your next blog post out?

I don’t really have a specific plan when I’m preparing my blog posts. If I’m a part of blog tours that week, I will put the information about the book and author in the post, just ready for the review and I will write the review once I finished the book.

Sometimes I schedule a post if I know I won’t be near my computer during the day I want to publish the post. But most of the time I get a draft of the post ready and the day before I post it, I will finish it (with pics and colors) so it’s ready to publish.

11. How many completed posts does it take for you to say its a ‘good blogging day’?

I don’t know. One I suppose. I’m just happy to be able to complete what I was doing and that’s about it. I try not to stress much about how many post I publish a day, or how many I completed and are ready to be posted. I just try to have fun with this.

My Questions:

  1. What’s the first book you remember reading?
  2. What are you currently reading? Are you enjoying it?
  3. Do you have reading goals for 2018?
  4. What fictional world would you choose to live in and why?
  5. What do you think and say when people ask you to choose a favorite book?
  6. Who are some of your favorite authors? And have you met them in person?
  7. Do you like reading outside? Where?
  8. Aside from reading and blogging, what do you enjoy doing? What hobbies do you have?
  9. What made you decide to start a book blog? What was your inspiration?
  10. How long have you been blogging? And how do you think of the experience so far?
  11. What advices do you have for new bloggers, or people that are thinking about starting a blog?
