My Review

Do I love Historical Romances? You guys know I do. This isn’t my first Rachel Brimble’s novel, and I was very excited to read this book, since it’s the start of a new series.

A Victorian saga… “A Widow’s Vow” follows Louisa Hill and Jacob Jackson in an unique story. I was quite surprised when I read the synopsis and I loved the plot once I read the story. It’s not a story we would expect, and Rachel Brimble did a brilliant job in creating a setting and storyline that allowed us to connect to the characters.

Louisa is amazing. I loved her determination and kindness. Jacob… I was quite fascinated by him and by his personality. They both have a past that is full of hardship and ugliness, still fate has a different path for them. Reading their interactions and the way their relationship developed was lovely.

Then there are all the other characters that gave the plot and the MC strength. Nancy was a character also love. Her and Louisa’s friendship made me so happy. But honestly, I can’t wait to read the next books and see how Nancy’s story is going to unfold, and I really want to learn more the other character and their pasts, lives and dreams.

Overall, it was a perfect start of a series. An unique story about the struggles in life, as well as the determination we must have to accomplish our goals. A Romance that made my heart warm up. Characters that I could connect with and that made me want to get to know them more with each page. A book that has dark and light, because that’s life.

My Review

This is the fifth book in The Edinburgh Crime Mysteries Series and if you are reading this review, and don’t know the series or the author, I highly recommend you go check out her books, because I honestly believe this is a series you should read from the beginning.

Since this is part of the series, I like to keep it free of facts that could be spoilers for any of the books. You know I have read the previous ones and I loved this one as much as the others.

The amazing thing about this entire series is that each time we follow DI Hunter in one of the journeys of figuring out the truth and reveal the culprit of the crime, we are also unveiling Hunter’s background and secrets.

This had a good balance for me, with past and present cases and Hunter leading us through the path to question, learn and be excited, until we finally arrive to the ending. Quite a fantastic mystery adventure, just the kind that makes me wanting. That may be why I always get very curious when a new book comes out.

From Hunter keeping me intrigued with his past and the relationship between him and everyone else… To the plot itself, and the motivations behind the crime… I was amazed by everything. It appears that Val Penny doesn’t get tired of surprising the readers, which makes me so happy.

Overall, I love the book. The uncovering of the truth. Learning more about Hunter and is past. See the action, the interactions, the brilliant descriptions and dialogues. Can’t wait to see what Val Penny comes up with next.

My Review

When I first read the synopsis and saw the cover & title, I was intrigued. I have been trying to read more thrillers and mystery novels, especially this summer because it’s a genre that usually blows my mind and gets me excited and curious to read the next page, which I believe is a perfect recipe for a beach day.

That been said, this book I didn’t read it at the beach, but still, I read it during a hot night. Which ended up being an even better combination, although I couldn’t put the book down until my eyes and hand couldn’t deal with the light. Nevertheless, the next night I was back at it again.

This story follows Beth. And after her friend is killed thing take a thrilling turn, that lead us to trying to figure out what really happened, side-by-side with Beth. With a group of characters that have secrets, which we uncover as the story goes, we are taken on a mystery looking for answers and theorizing who’s responsible.

It is a ‘who done it’ kind of book and for people that enjoying the uncover of secrets and to figure out the truth, creating theories along the way… then this is definitely a book you should consider.

The scenery and the flow of the story helps with the tension and mystery of the plot, which is a good thing to have in this type of book. Also, it’s a group of friends, and that makes things even more weary, because we are suppose to truth our friends, especially if we know them a long time. Although, that means nothing, and this book reminded me of that.

Overall, I enjoyed it. I could say I had fun. I was hooked at various points of the storytelling because of the revelations or the questions. And I was satisfied with the ending, which is something that I hope for once I finish reading this genre of books.

My Review

This isn’t the first novel by Jessica Redland that I have read, so when I saw the book I was curious and ended up reading the synopsis and getting even more interested in reading this story.

As we follow Sam and her life, we get to meet other people, feel the friendship grow between her and Thomas, and learn more about Hedgehog Hollow. Of course, there are problems, obstacles, but life isn’t just flowers, and seeing the character development was fantastic.

This is a story with amazing characters that were relatable, because we all know people like these. And it had some drama, romance friendship and family, and a heartwarming story. The author explores lots of elements about life, and that I enjoy a story that is character based and makes me think about the community, about our own lives and relationships.

Plus, if that doesn’t convince you to give the book a chance, some character are animals. And I love when a story has animals, and not in a “bad things happen because of them”, but in a fun way, pet and farm animals.

Overall, it was a warm storytelling with friendship, kindness and love, that made me dream and feel all of the characters emotions as I was reading, page after page.

About the Author

The Mysterious Lord Millcroft - Virginia Heath

When Virginia Heath was a little girl it took her ages to fall asleep, so she made up stories in her head to help pass the time while she was staring at the ceiling. As she got older, the stories became more complicated, sometimes taking weeks to get to the happy ending. Then one day, she decided to embrace the insomnia and start writing them down. Despite that, it still takes her forever to fall asleep.

My Review

By now, and after more than ten books written by Virginia Heath that I have read, I assume you all know how much I love this author’s writing and storytelling. Still, I’m naive, because every time I start one of Virginia Heath’s new books I think to myself “Will she surprise me with this story?” I’m saying I’m naive because I still ask that, as if ten-plus books later and getting surprised every time wasn’t enough to know I WILL BE SURPRISED!

Okay, I know you are possibly questioning my sanity by now, but let me tell you something so you understand why I loved this book.

When I first started my journey through the wonderful genre of Historical Romances, I fell in love with it thanks to three authors, one of which was Virginia Heath. It was thanks to her and other lovely ladies that write this genre that I found that I enjoyed tropes more than I thought about. One of those tropes was the “Marriage of Convenience”.

In this book we have that exact trope. As we follow Lady Lydia Barton and her impending arranged marriage, through the romance scenes and all the tension that makes my heart fill with excitement, I fell in love with the characters.

I was very invested in the story from start to finish, wanting to learn more about the characters and their pasts. What made them who they were and the relationships they had. I always love the characters in Virginia Heath’s because they feel real and part of our reality.

From the brilliant descriptions, to the fantastic plot that made me curious and excited at each turn of a page, Virginia Heath captivated me in yet another wonderful escape through time and space.

Overall, if you love historical romances, like I do, and marriage by convenience and enemies to lovers tropes are your cup of tea, this book if meant for you. If you love to laugh, have fun, feel for the characters and uncover mysteries, this book is for you. Well, if you live romance stories, no matter time or space, just get the book and escape to this world and meet Lydia and Owen, I guarantee you will enjoy their story.

“Palestina Sobre uma Tela” Review

Olá meus queridos amigos!

Hoje venho partilhar convosco a minha opinião de um livro que li recentemente e que sei que vão achar tão interessante quanto eu achei.

Palestina Sobre uma Tela“, escrito por André Ouro Verde, é um Romance, publicado a 25 de Março por Edições Velha Lenda.

Quero agradecer à editora Edições Velha Lenda por me terem gentilmente fornecido o livro. Todas as opiniões expressas nesta review são completamente minhas.

Sinopse

My Review

My Review

By now it wouldn’t be a surprise that I read and reviewed yet another historical novel, this one in the Saga genre.

I was thankful that I was able to read the previous books in the series before tackling this one and I may have found another author that I will add to my list to keep an eye out for more books. The fact that I read the series in order ended up being for the best. It was such an amazing journey.

Changes keep happening, the characters are taken on an emotional rollercoaster, and have to decided the new step in each moment and each event that takes place. And us, the readers, ended up going with them. Following these strong women on their paths, getting to know them even more, even in this third book.

As we get introduced to new characters, things keep getting exciting. It was as if I was part of the community, of this family. And since it’s the third book, I had some time to understand the amazing and loyal girls, the Harper girls.

We don’t just follow one person or couple, we follow a group of people through their lives and now, with new characters, and news, it was just felt like a new chapter in their lives and my reading journey. Something that may have been because I read book after book, but still, I felt truly emotional about every single one of those women and I just hope there is a forth book coming.

There is a sense of connection while reading this book, it may be because the setting was so realistic, or because it’s not as far back into the past as we may think. But I felt as if I was transported to that moment in time, right beside these characters, and living with them.

Overall, I liked this book a lot, as I did the previous, and I recommend you read it in other so you can fully connect with the story and the characters, as well as get to enjoy the series to it’s fullest potential.

My Review

The life of a writer can be different for everyone. For me, messy hair, my computer open, lots of notebooks and loose papers full of notes and information.. a cup of tea and a bottle of water… snacks! Many snacks… and now, Sacha Black’s The Anatomy of Prose.

I have decided, while in a moment of reflection, that I was going to learn more about the writing world. That I was going to learn and see what I could improve in my writing.

And then, like the answer to my prayers, Sacha Black wrote this brilliant nonfiction, writing book. Thanks to the universe for aligning the stars and crossing our paths… I was able to read an ARC of this book.

You may be wondering: “But Jess, you are a Portuguese author, you write in Portuguese… wouldn’t thinks be different?” Well, it’s certain that not everything can be take literally. But the thing is, all of Sacha Black’s advice and tips, can be applied to any language, because it’s all about prose.

Sure, in Portuguese we have dialogues structured in a different way and I could show you some examples. But that doesn’t mean the tip about dialogue tags (Step 5 – 5.2 Tag Simplicity) isn’t valuable, because let me tell you it was spot on!

That’s just one example. Even if the words may be different, or you have grammatically different writing, comparing to English… it’s about the core of prose, the art of writing.

Quoting Sacha “You’ve come for grammar and punctuation lessons. This is not a grammar book.” And she wrote “this book as an exploration – a narrative examining a range of techniques and tools in writing.

That, ladies and gentlemen, is why I believe The Anatomy of Prose is a fantastic book that can help writers across the world and language barriers.

Plus, let’s be honest, the tone of this book is amazing, funny and with this casual sounding narrative that felt like a sincere conversation between friends. You will never be bored while reading, understanding, learning and thinking about the various tips, examples and exercises.

That been said… do I recommend this book? Of course! If you want to learn more or even understand what you can improve in you writing, this is perfect book for you.
