I stand in the shadows at the back of the club and clock the action. All the tables are occupied, mostly by our girls with punters, their faces lit by the glow from the pink shaded table lamps and the odd stroke of light from the glitter ball. Waitresses are slipping between the tables with bottles of fake champagne for the girls and straight drinks for the punters. I look at the crowd standing round the bar and recognise a couple of faces from a Clerkenwell firm, who I’ve not seen in here before, talking to a big fat bloke with a small blond woman hanging off his arm.

While I’m wondering what it might be about, Lizzie comes out of the door behind the bar and walks towards one of the tables. She catches the eye of the girl and gives her a nod. The girl says something to the punter and then leads him past the bandstand and through a door at the back of the club. As Lizzie turns to the bar I step forward and she sees me and comes over.

‘Hello loveliness,’ she says, slipping her arm round me and brushing her lips against my cheek. I want to kiss her full on but two Japanese gents are staring at us, so I give her a quick peck and follow her through the tables as the band go into ‘Bring it on Home’. She leads me into the office, we have a quick cuddle, then she pours two whiskies, gives one to me and we sit on the sofa.
