I hope you are all having a fantastic week and a good Wednesday. Since this morning I’m going to the gym – my first day – I’m posting this before I live home. So wish me luck and I can’t way to read your comments about this book.
Today I bring you all a review of another great crime/mystery book, the first in The Edinburgh Crime Mysteries Series, called “Hunter’s Chase“, written by Val Penny.
Thank you Val and Rachel, at Rachel’s Random Resources, for the eCopy of this book in exchange for an honest review and for allowing me to be a part of this blog tour.
Hunter by name – Hunter by nature: DI Hunter Wilson will not rest until Edinburgh is safe.
DI Hunter Wilson knows there is a new supply of cocaine flooding his city and he needs to find the source but his attention is transferred to murder when a corpse is discovered in the grounds of a golf course. Shortly after the post-mortem, Hunter witnesses a second murder but that is not the end of the slaughter. With a young woman’s life also hanging in the balance, the last thing Hunter needs is a new man on his team: the son of his nemesis, the former Chief Constable. Hunter’s perseverance and patience are put to the test time after time in this taught crime thriller.

Val Penny is an American author living in SW Scotland. She has two adult daughters of whom she is justly proud and lives with her husband and two cats. She has a Law degree from Edinburgh University and her MSc from Napier University. She has had many jobs including hairdresser, waitress, lawyer, banker, azalea farmer and lecturer. However she has not yet achieved either of her childhood dreams of being a ballet dancer or owning a candy store. Until those dreams come true, she has turned her hand to writing poetry, short stories and novels. Her first crime novel, ‘Hunter’s Chase’ set in Edinburgh, Scotland was published by Crooked Cat Books on 02.02.2018. The sequel, ‘Hunter’s Revenge’ will be published on 09.09.2018.
“Hunter’s Chase” is the first book in the series and it was a fantastic start of a series. Val gets you intrigued in not only the mystery/crime that got you to start the book, but the new group of character – primarily the main character, Hunter Wilson – that get you on this mystery adventure.
Yesterday I was talking to my friend, a crime/mystery lover, about books, and he agreed that in a good mystery book, the plot is not the only important thing. A character that engages and let us feel like we are part of the story because of how we get suck in, is also important. Most of the time even if the mystery is epic and the crime mind blowing, if the characters don’t hold down the house and develop as the book goes, the storyline can die and feel boring. But… If the characters surprise us, makes us laugh, make us hate or love them, make us excited to learn new things and facts… then the storyline gets a great pace and the mystery journey keeps unfolding.
Val gets that in her book. She makes me get curious about the mystery and curious to learn more about DI Hunter Wilson. As the book continues, from the first page to the last, I was kind happy in a way. Happy because with each book I reads in this genre I get surprise by the author’s take on the all crime and mystery idea and gave the book their own personal twist.
Things keep happening, some are unexpected, others are just amazingly described, and I kept wondering about what would happen next. The thriller aspect of the book and Val’s vivid descriptions gave the book a powerful punch and that’s one of the reasons I loved it so much and why I believe the book is an amazing start in the series.
Full of action, descriptions, crime, murder, thriller and a fantastic main character… Val Penny’s “Hunter’s Chase” is here to take the spotlight (for a moment, just until the next book in the series arrives, then we can go crazy again) and take us in a rollercoaster of emotions and mystery.
